There are rituals and rites connected to the traditional Chinese wedding. Some are still practiced now, in the more modern ways. The marriage is considered a joining of two families as well as a joining of the young couple. Both families participate in planning all details of the happy occasion.
When choosing the date, the moon and stars must be in the correct alignment. The lunar calendar is used to make sure the date chosen is a lucky one. Also, the ceremony on the wedding day must take place beginning on the half hour rather than on the hour. This is to insure the hands of the clock will be on the upswing. This is indicative of the marriage beginning on an upswing, or lucky movement.
The traditional color theme is red. The bridal gown is red and the happiness banners are red. Many of the other decorations are also in red, although other bright colors are included. On the day of the marriage, the bride wears a white dress in church. A red gown is worn for the banquet and reception. Before leaving, she changes into a cocktail dress to say goodbye as the couple departs.
The red gown is floor or ankle length. Some are shorter, with wide pants in the same fabric worn underneath. Invitations and gift cards given to the couple are in red envelopes. It is the color representing good luck and happiness.
Right after the church ceremony, there is a Chinese wedding tea ceremony. This is for both sets of parents. Next they all proceed to the hall where the banquet is held. Fish, roast pig, pigeon, lobster and chicken are all served in a twelve course meal. Each food is representative of peace or love or good luck.
On the wedding night, the groom is supposed to light a dragon and phoenix candle. It is symbolic of driving an evil spirit away. They partake of wine in two goblets tied together with red string. A dish of half-raw dumplings is given to the bride. It supposedly indicates a happy future.
An old tradition is for the bride to wake up the next morning and cook a sumptuous meal for the grooms parents. It is an indication of her good manners. In three days, the new couple visits the home of the brides parents. She is welcomed as a guest in their home rather than someone who resides there. Her new home is with the groom. This concludes the required ceremonies connected to a traditional Chinese wedding.
