Microwave ovens have become a very effective way to heat food up quickly. In fact, statistics show that microwave ovens are being used in nearly 90% of all homes. People enjoy the convenience of heating up food in just a few minutes. This is especially helpful for a busy schedule and perfect for use during lunch breaks while at the office. Leftovers and frozen foods, including entire entrees can be cooked in this convenient kitchen appliance. Although many use microwave ovens often, there are certain things that one should be aware of to prevent danger. The following discusses when it is exceptionally important to be cautious when using microwave ovens.
The first danger in using a microwave oven is that plastics can become dangerous, even toxic when heated in a microwave oven. It is suggested that if you heat up plastics in your microwave oven, be certain that the plastic is labeled microwave safe. When regular plastic is heated in the microwave, a chemical called Bisphenol A can be released in toxic doses. In animals, Bisphenol A has shown to cause serious neurological problems. The best choice when heating food up in the microwave is to use a glass, microwave safe container.
Another danger involved in the use of microwave ovens is the potential to become scalded by hot, boiling water. Water heats up rather quickly in the microwave oven, and can explode. If you must heat water in the microwave, only heat it for the minimal amount of time needed. Also, it is vital that infant bottles are never heated in the microwave oven. Serious burns may occur to the infant due to using a microwave oven.
Another problem with microwave oven use is that the food is not heated up evenly. When this happens, cold pockets may be left in the meat causing bacteria to appear. These unhealthy bacteria can be very dangerous and cause you to become ill. Make sure when cooking meat that you follow all guidelines. Furthermore, avoid cooking raw meat in the microwave when at all possible, due to the uneven heating process.
Yet another issue that is possible when cooking in a microwave oven is that it is possible for the chemistry to change when the food cooks. This is a statistic that is still being debated; however, it is very likely that the food cooked in a microwave oven will lose some of the important nutrients. In addition, it is suggested that some ingredients such as lycopene can be increased to hazardous levels. These studies are still being done so there is no hard evidence at this point that microwave ovens alter the chemistry of food.
Microwave ovens can be a very convenient and healthy choice for cooking food when proper guidelines are followed. Remember to use the microwave oven with caution, avoiding plastic use as well as boiling water in the microwave. Also, check all microwave oven parts regularly to be certain that it is functioning correctly. When used properly, a microwave oven is an exceptional kitchen appliance.
