In every kitchen there is a refrigerator of some kind. In many kitchens, there are Amana refrigerators. Amana refrigerators have become popular due to their reliability, but even they can malfunction. When your Amana refrigerator stops working, the electrical parts can be tested by using either a multimeter or an ohmmeter. An ohmmeter is a device that measures the continuity of electrical components. Continuity of an electrical component is the term used to describe an electrical circuit that is complete. A complete or closed circuit means that an electrical current is flowing. A broken or open circuit means that electricity is not being conducted. A multimeter not only measures continuity, but also voltage, which is the flow of the electrical current.
Some Amana refrigerator parts that can be tested are the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, compressor relay, and the adaptive defrost control. The adaptive defrost control is found in Amana refrigerators rather than a defrost timer. You must exercise extreme caution when testing the adaptive defrost control because the refrigerator must remain plugged in and running at the time of the test. Since there will be a current of electricity flowing, you will get a voltage and a continuity reading on the multimeter. When your Amana refrigerator defrost stops working, the adaptive defrost control is usually the part responsible and should be replaced.
When testing Amana refrigerator parts, be sure to research how and where to locate the part that you want to test. Find out how to disconnect the wires properly and how to place the multimeter probes onto the part to be tested, or you will not get a correct reading. If the part is working correctly, you should get an ohmmeter reading of near zero. This means that the circuit is closed and current is flowing. If you get a higher reading or a zero reading, then the circuit is open and the part needs to be replaced. However, when you testing the defrost timer, you should get a reading of near zero in the first two pairs of terminals, but a reading of infinity in the third pair. If it does not, then the timer needs to be replaced.
Be sure that you practice all safety measures when diagnosing your Amana refrigerator parts. With the exception of the adaptive defrost control, your appliance should be unplugged from the wall before opening the panel to conduct electrical testing. Also make sure that you have a quality multimeter. There are some good ones for a lower price, but for a few extra dollars, you can find a better quality one that will produce more reliable readings and last longer. Using testing meters can help make replacing your Amana refrigerator parts easier.
