- How to Keep Your Freezer More Efficient
Whether you have a stand-alone freezer or a freezer/refrigerator combination, simple common sense can help lower your power bill and ensure the quality of the food you store in your freezer. The basic idea is to keep the cold air in and the room-temperature air out. Of course, you probably discourage standing in front of the open freezer door for minutes at a time as a handy way to cool off on a hot summer day. Sometimes cooks will open the door and take a few minutes deliberating over what to take out for supper, and some amount of this is unavoidable.
Other than that, your freezer is built to keep your frozen foods frozen. The simplest part of your freezer is also one of the most important ones: the freezer door gasket or freezer door seals. Freezer gaskets are rubber strips attached to the edge of your freezer door and the edge of the freezer itself. When you close the door there should be a solid freezer door seal and the door slightly resistant to opening. No cold air leaks out, no room temperature air gets in. Your ice cream stays frozen, your foods stay fresher, and you're not wasting electricity.
You can check your freezer door seals easily; it's probably a good idea to check your freezer door gasket once a week or whenever you clean the front of the freezer. If your freezer gasket is cracked, loose, missing or torn, it will allow cold air to escape and your freezer has to work harder to compensate for the leak. Keeping the freezer door seal clean also improves its ability to work efficiently. Spills can prevent the freezer door gaskets from making a tight seal.
Freezer door gaskets also won't work if the door is not shut tight. New freezers often swing completely shut with just a touch, but the older your appliance is the more likely it is that the door needs to be firmly shut. Sometimes items in the freezer door prevent the freezer door seals from meeting and sealing in the cold air. A partially-closed freezer door won't waste as much electricity as one left wide open, but it still overworks the freezer motor and can cause your frozen foods to defrost and spoil. Check your freezer every now and then to make sure it has not been accidently left open.
An effective freezer door seal is pliant, unbroken and clean. Freezer door gaskets are relatively inexpensive, and the cost of replacement is quickly offset by savings in your electricity bills. Anyone can spot a problem with a freezer door gasket and the repair or replacement of freezer gaskets is fast and easy.
