If the only thing missing from your kitchen is a garbage disposal, you may consider adding the device to your kitchen sink. Garbage disposals can slightly raise your property value and enhance the overall appeal of your kitchen. Plus, they come in very useful on a daily basis for those who do a lot of cooking.
If you decide to add a garbage disposal to your kitchen and want to install the addition yourself, you will first want to turn of the power and remove all of the drain lines from your sink. Make sure the disposal system you purchased will fit underneath the sink and then turn the power off at the breaker. Place a rag around the main drain to prevent any leaks as you remove the existing drain lines. You will then loosen the large nut at the base of the sink and drop it down. Press the strainer body through the sink and take it off.
Next, you will have to loosen the screws around the sink opening and remove any putty that may be holding things together. You will then have to use a screwdriver and pry the snap ring off the flange of the sink. The mounting assembly should come apart once it is removed. Separate all of the parts and do not damage the fiber gasket as you do so.
Once the parts are separated, put a large roll of plumbers putty around the opening of the sink and push it into place. You can then put the fiber gasket and metal ring back into place over the flange. Then, hold the fiber gasket into place and put the mounting ring over top of it. Hold the parts in place with a rubber band and install the snap ring. After it has all been popped into place, remove the rubber band. You will want to clean up any putty that comes out during the process from around the sink flange area.
Knock out eh plug and turn the disposal unit on its side. You can then connect the dishwasher line to the unit. Once the line is connected, locate the electrical hole and put a wire clamp in place. You will want to make sure the electricity is turned off before you do anything to the electrical wires. You will then connect and secure the ground wires and push them into the access hole.
The disposal system will need to be mounted underneath the sink and you will still have to install drain lines. If the overall project seems overwhelming, you can always hire a plumber to install the garbage disposal for you. That way, any garbage disposal parts that you may need along the way will be on hand during installation.
