Lawn care is not something everyone looks forward to doing. Mowing the grass may be pretty standard, but trimming the lawn is not something you may feel as if you are good at doing. Trimming and edging along a lawn, however, can make your grass really stand out and the overall appearance of your house much better. The mower cannot reach everything and if you take the time to trim, you can cut down the excess grass and weeds around fences, mailboxes, light poles, trees, sidewalks and other areas.

Most trim work is done with a grass trimmer. These trimmers come powered by either gas or electricity. The electric versions are much lighter in weight, but you will have to worry about working around an electrical extension cord. The gas versions are free from cords, but much heavier. All grass trimmers have nylon strings that whip around in order to cut the grass. Some more advanced versions even have blades instead of the strings. As you begin the trimming process, make sure you place the grass trimmer at the right level so the edges of your lawn will be cut to the same length as the part you mowed. If you trim too much, the trimmed areas may look worse than they did before you trimmed. They could also get scalped and die off.

Before you begin trimming, make sure you put on protective eyewear. Many grass trimmer parts include guards, but these guards are not always sufficient when it comes to protecting your eyes. Whenever you trim, you will inevitably have grass flying toward you. You may also hit other debris and cause it to fly as well. It is important to protect your eyes from these flying objects at all times. It is also a good idea to wear jeans anytime you trim so your legs are also protected. If you get the grass trimmer too close to your legs, you could cut yourself.

If you are in the market for a grass trimmer, you should expect to spend around $100. Electric trimmers generally cost less and they are a little more quiet. They also require less maintenance. If you only have to trim within 100-150 feet of the electrical outlets on your house, gas trimmers are the best option. If, however, you have to trim much farther away from the house, gas trimmers may be a better idea since they are much more mobile.

Shop around and watch for sales and good prices on grass trimmers. If you are able to wait until the end of the lawn season, you should be able to find a great deal on a trimmer, whether you want gas or electric.
