If you use electric power tools on a regular basis, you know they can be dangerous. If you do not use them very often, you may actually be even more prone to having an accident when you do put them to use. Either way, it is a good idea to observe the electric power tools guidelines for safety before you work on any project that uses electric range parts.
There are plenty of very unique hazards that can arise from using tools with an electric source of power. Electric shock is the first and one of the most dangerous hazards. Many electric shocks occur because the user has not insulated themselves between the current portions of the tool and the tool's metal frame. You will want to make sure that all of your electric power tools are double insulated to prevent shocks from occurring. Most modern tools come with a single layer of insulation. Double insulation can help the entire tool become more safe. It is a good idea if the encasing material is also shatterproof so the tool is still safe to handle even if it has been dropped.
Electric power tools also need to be properly grounded in order to work in a safe manner. The tools that have ground fault circuit interrupters are the most safe for the operator. A ground is the connection of an electrical circuit to the earth. In regular electric systems, the frames, cases, or even switches ground the parts. IF there is a defect or some sort of short circuit within the tool, the current can be drained into the frame through the grounding wire and not through the user's body. If the grounding device is not working properly, the current will look for another place to ground itself. This is how current flow is redirected into the operator.
As you plan your next project, make sure you check all grounding connections in your tools on a regular basis. They need to be tight, free of oil, dirt and other debris. You will also want any power tool you use to have to have a test feature. Test the grounding on the tool on a regular basis as well so you can ensure the safety of the tool. If you have any doubts at all about the safety of the electric power tools, talk to an electrician to have the item more fully evaluated. If the tool is not expensive enough to warrant that length, you can always buy a new tool that you can guarantee is safe to use. If you have ever been even mildly shocked by a tool, do not use it again. Make sure you have the item repaired or completely replaced.
