When you are looking for a new dryer for your laundry room, you have two basic choices, gas and electric. Many modern dryers run on electricity but gas dryers have plenty of advantages you will want to consider before making a decision.
Gas dryers have small motors that turn the wet clothes inside as they get washed. This is no different than an electric dryer. The difference between the two is the way in which they create the heated air to get rid of the water and dry the clothes out once they are clean. Electric dryers have electricity to heat the coil that fans and creates heat. Gas dryers, on the other hand, provide heat by using gas.
The first thing you will want to think about is the venting requirements of the gas dryer and whether or not you have those requirements in your home. Gas dryers need a specific gas line hook up in order to work. They should have safety features like a shutoff value and other elements. If you have no gas line available in your home, an additional cost will be charged to run a line when you have the dryer installed. If you have no natural gas lines at all, you will have to use propane tanks and the cost becomes even higher.
If none of that is a factor, the cost of washing one load of laundry and then drying it with a gas dryer is much cheaper. Electric dryers generally cost 30 or even 40 cents for every time they are run. Gas dryers cost half that at only 15 or 20 cents per load. Gas dryers may be a little more expensive to purchase initially, but that cost comes back in usage over the years you enjoy the dryer in your home.
Gas dryers also dry clothes much faster and that increases their efficiency. The gas dryer can get rid of heat more quickly as well and that helps clothes come out much less wrinkled. That aspect saves you on ironing later. These dryers also monitor the levels of heat during the cycle and therefore, shut off automatically when the load is dry. That helps prevent clothes shrinkage that can occur when items are over dried. You can also expect much less static when you use a gas dryer.
No matter what type of gas dryer you choose, make sure you ask the sales associates about gas dryer parts. If you want to keep your dryer for many years and plan to maintain it properly, you will probably need to buy parts at some point. It is a good idea to buy a popular dryer that will have parts available for many years.
