Aside from the common forms of treatment in dealing with infertility problems, fertility clinics can do more in helping couples conceive a child. They perform treatments that involve invasive and radical procedures to assist fertilization and conception.
There are four main procedures: intrauterine insemination or IUI, in vitro fertilization or IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI, and gamete intrafallopian transfer or GIFT.
Intrauterine insemination or IUI is also more popularly known as artificial insemination. A sperm is inserted into the female's womb during her ovulation period with the use of a fine probe or needle called a catheter. Fertility drugs may be prescribed prior to the procedure to induce the production of eggs. Sperm and eggs may come from donors in cases where the couple's own sperm and eggs are not viable. IUI is prescribed in cases of unexplained infertility, ejaculation problems, and impotence. There is a 10 to 15% success rate for each cycle that it is attempted.
In vitro fertilization or IVF involves the harvesting of sperm and eggs, which are then combined in a laboratory setting, after which the resulting zygote or embryo is injected into the female's womb. Fertility medication are also given to stimulate egg production.
Once a healthy embryo is developed, it is injected into the womb, again with the use of a catheter. For young women, depositing one or two embryos are usually enough. For women over forty, however, three embryos may be injected. The other viable embryos may be frozen for use in the future. Again, the sperm and eggs may be donated or collected from the couple themselves. IVF is warranted in cases of unexplained infertility, when there is blocking of the fallopian tubes, PCOS, and mild t Fertility Clinics Can Do For You

IVF is warranted in cases of unexplained infertility, when there is blocking of the fallopian tubes, PCOS, and mild HYPERLINK "http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/endometriosis1.shtml" endometriosis. It has a success rate of roughly 25%.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI involves injecting a single sperm into the cytoplasm of the female's single egg. Afterwards, it is placed in her womb. ICSI is warranted in cases of low sperm counts, poor sperm motility or abnormal sperm cells. It is also warranted when attempts at IVF are unsuccessful, and in cases where the sperm is directly retrieved from the testicles or the epididymis. Success rate is similar to IVF at roughly 25% or higher.
Gamete intrafallopian transfer or GIFT is almost similar to IVF, except that the sperm and eggs are not mixed in the laboratory. Instead, they are immediately injected into one of the fallopian tubes so that fertilization occurs within the body. This procedure is not so widely practiced. It is prescribed in cases of unexplained infertility. The success rate is lower than that of IVF, although it hard to measure as it is sometimes offered to couples with whom IVF treatment has failed.
Some fertility clinics offer more options, which include blastocyst transfer, wherein the embryo is allowed to develop in the lab for 5 to 6 days before they are transferred to the womb. The more developed embryo results in a usually higher pregnancy rate. Assisted hatching of embryos are also done, wherein a small hole is made in the gel-like membrane called the zona pellucida. This hole helps the embryo successfully break through and results in a higher implantation rate.
