By definition, there are basically two types of infertility. For women no older than than thirty five years old, infertility is the failure to conceive after a year of sex without using any birth control methods. For women above thirty five, this period is only a minimum of six months. It is also considered a sign of infertility when a pregnancy fails to proceed to its full term on at least two occasions.
There are a lot of couples with difficulties in fertility all over the world. In this information age, couples can avail of help in their attempts to conceive from many quarters. These include fertility clinics, fertility consultants, their doctors, and the internet. These sources provide excellent information from the anatomy of the reproductive system, to ways of increasing the chances of success to conceive, including infertility treatments.
There are many causes of infertility. Some include anatomical problems of the reproductive organs, while some are physiological. Psychological factor also come into the picture, as well as genetics and the environment. Therefore treatments can vary, since they are geared towards solving different problems. Such treatments include counseling, infertility therapy and even alternative medicine. There are also hormonal treatments, correction through surgery, and other techniques of fertilization.
Many problems are easily treatable. These include such cases as low sperm count, lack or irregular menstruation, and other temporary conditions. A lot of infertility treatments are less or non-intrusive, and not emotionally taxing. These include medications, rest from stress, and the like. These less stressful techniques need to be considered before radical options such as in vitro fertilization are considered.
To diagnose the causes of a particular case of infertility, laboratory examination is mandatory. For example, cases where the suspected problem is in the semen will necessitate examination of a semen sample. This can determine physical problems for the semen, such as varicocele, where a there is a vein enlargement surrounding the testicles, interfering with the production of sperm.
In the case where the problem is in the female, the normal reproductive cycle involves the maturation of an ovum or egg roughly every 28 days or one month. This is called ovulation. The ovulation time of a female can be determined by monitoring the basal body temperature with a specialized thermometer. This thermometer shows the woman's temperature every morning after waking up, prior to any activity, even before peeing in the bathroom. During the period of ovulation, the female body temperature is relatively higher, and it only subsides to the standard normal upon the beginning of menstruation.
If a female stops ovulating due to stress or weight-related issues, a simple psychological counseling or consultation with a dietitian may be all that is needed to solve the infertility problem. If it is a problem with hormones, determined by lab tests, infertility treatments will include hormone medication, such as giving pills or other similar therapy. One supportive device is the so-called ovulation predictor kit, which measures hormonal changes in the female's urine, and indicates when ovulation should normally occur.
Specialized obstetrician-gynecologists well versed in reproductive endocrinology are the most qualified doctors to provide infertility treatments. The patient wishing to avail of such treatments should seriously regard this kind of qualification from her doctor.
