Infertility is a condition that affects a lot of people. Today, however, those suffering from it do not need to be wary about seeking treatment since the social stigma that accompanied it has disappeared almost completely. If you are considering undergoing fertility treatment, you need only see a fertility specialist to get you started.
While receiving fertility treatment is indeed relatively easy, anyone who is planning to do so should make it a point to know everything there is to know about infertility and the various treatment options available. This article provides a brief discussion of infertility in general, and a rundown of the treatment choices available in most fertility clinics.
Understanding Infertility
There is no singular, all-encompassing definition for the word "infertility" - the term is used too loosely for it to be readily defined. Most people, however, associate it with the inability to have a child. The said definition is still the subject of many a debate, as there are no set guidelines explicitly stating when the term can be used, but for reproductive endocrinologists , a female patient is said to be infertile if she falls under either of these conditions:
No conception following a whole year of unprotected intercourse (for women younger than 35)
No conception following 6 months of unprotected intercourse (for women 35 years of age and older)
Infertility is not gender-exclusive - that is, both men and women can be affected by it. There are factors that can lead to infertility on both camps; these can be either genetic or environmental in nature. Some factors, however, have something to do with problems with a person's hypothalamus, thyroid, and/or pituitary gland.
Other causes of infertility are specific to either the male or the female gender. Female-specific causes include the following: ovulation disorders, defects in the fallopian tubes or other parts of the reproductive system, and problems related to age, among others. Male-specific causes, on the other hand, are often caused by problems in the quality of the person's semen.
Fertility Treatment Options
The following is a short list of fertility treatment options offered by most fertility clinics:
Prescription drugs - This option is the least invasive, and those who prefer this treatment over others do not need to go to a fertility doctor to receive it as a gynecologist can readily prescribe these to those who need them.
Surgery - Surgery to treat infertility may be minor, such as a laparoscopy, or a major operation wherein an incision has to be made in your abdomen. Surgery is often done to correct defects in the ovary or if the fallopian tubes are blocked.
Artificial Insemination - Probably the most popular fertility treatment option, this refers to the method of placing sperm in the female patient's uterus at the right time to increase the odds of conception.
ART or Assisted Reproductive Technology - Under this option are the more advanced treatments such as IVF (in vitro fertilization) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).
