In addition to being uncomfortable and unpleasant, warts are also contagious. So if you have a wart(s), then it's advisable to begin treating it as opposed to leaving it be. After all, there's no point risking the possibility of spreading warts to other areas of your body.
You don't necessarily have to see a dermatologist to get wart treatment. Meaning, you can begin treating them yourself. There are several OTC (over the counter) products out there, many of which are made using salicylic acid. It's worth mentioning, no other ingredient has proven to eradicate warts any better than salicylic acid.
You use these products by simply applying the medication directly to your wart and then covering it with an appropriate sized bandage. You don't necessarily have to perform these first two steps separately. In other words, you can probably obtain adhesive pads that have been pre-treated with salicylic acid.
Lastly, it can take a number of days or even weeks to remove the wart completely this way, so don't expect overnight results.
Another OTC product is the at home "freezing" kits, which either consist of liquid nitrogen or dimethyl ether. When a wart is frozen, it peels off a few days afterwards because of the cellular destruction that takes place during the freezing procedure.
Smaller sized warts are easier to remove than large ones when using the freezing method. Specifically, large warts are harder to freeze to the point that the skin tissue starts to die. If all goes well, your wart should show signs of falling off a few days after the procedure.
Next, there are a few other methods you may want to think about if you're interested in removing a wart yourself. Specific wart removal home remedies often work just as well as the other methods mentioned previously. For instance, you can use natural substances, like herbs, minerals and vitamins.
With all this talk of wart removal products and home treatments, you may be asking yourself if you need to involve your doctor at some point. Professional attention only becomes necessary if you aren't able to remove a wart by yourself. Medical wart treatment generally begins with a simple prescription. But, if the medicine doesn't work, then minor surgery is performed.
Many similarities exist between prescription and store bought wart medications. However, prescription strength salicylic acid is around three and a half times stronger than what you can find on the shelves at your store.
Cryotherapy is a second option that your physician may consider. This procedure freezes the wart with a powerful dose of liquid nitrogen.
The last method physicians use to eliminate warts is surgery. Specifically, the two surgical procedures used most often are laser and electro-surgery. Both of these procedures employ high intensity heat to cauterize (burn) the wart. Surgery is the fastest way to remove warts, but not without a price. The chance of scarring is higher and they also have a longer recovery time.
