The history of the Remington electric shaver is quite interesting. Believe it or not, the name Remington is very much associated with the popular firearms manufacturer because that is what the company did. The company was founded in 1816 by E. Remington under the name E. Remington and Sons with the periodic experiments with other products such as farm implements and, more recently, the electric shaver.
The foray into personal care products started in 1937, branching out into the electric shaver with the Remington E model, or the Close Shaver. Two years later, at the New York World's Fair, Remington introduced the world to their new shaver.
Then in 1940 Americans were introduced to the world's first two headed electric shaver called the Remington Dual. You might remember the slogan that went with it, "Two heads are better than one!" Things really began to take off as American males were enjoying the "dry shave". In 1941, just one year after the Dual came out, the company introduced the first multi head shaver with trimming ability and was dubbed the Foursome. A little note of trivia is that the American hero and General Douglas MacArthur served as the Chairman of the Board of the Remington Rand Company in the 1950's. In 1955 Remington Rand merged with the Sperry Company to form the Sperry Rand Corporation and the Remington Shaver division of Sperry introduced the first cordless shaver in 1960 called the Lectronic. Men were not the only demographic Remington was after. Women were blessed with the Lady Remington Wet/Dry Shaver. Today's technology in shavers is available for women as well as men and shavers accounted for 35 percent of the company's total sales in 1996.
To succeed in business, you need to be an innovator, and the Remington Shaver division did it's share moving from to the "Soft Touch" flexible foil system from the "Slot Head" system in 1975. Today there is the Triple Foil and Dual Foil/XLR, along with the "Microscreen" that lifts whiskers to shave below the skin. And then there is the gentleman that uttered the now famous words, "I liked the shaver so much, I bought the company". Victor Kiam, in 1979, bought the Remington Shaver division from the Sperry Rand Company in a leveraged buy-out. Mr. Kiam merged the division with his already existing Remington Products Inc. forming Remington Products Incorporated. The first retail store for Remington did not exist until 1981 in New Haven, Connecticut, now with more than 80 stores across the U.S.
