There are thousands of restaurants in New York City, offering just about any type of known delicacy in the world. A few of these joints stand out, having gained tremendous fame for different reasons. Following are some of the more famous NYC Restaurants that you must check out on your next visit to the "city that never sleeps".
Junior's (Midtown and Brooklyn)
A Brooklyn landmark, Junior's signature dessert, the cheesecake that is decadently smooth, is what diners are raving a lot about. The restaurant also offers fried chicken, burgers, and other decent meals. Its "most fabulous cheesecake in the world" has followed a family-perfected process and recipe since the 1950s. Former US President Bill Clinton and ex-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani are just two of the famous people who love Junior's cheesecake. The cheesecake is so famous that when the joint caught fire in 1981, people shouted "Save the cheesecake!"
Carnegie Deli (Midtown)
This joint is considered one of the famous NYC restaurants because of its tasty corned beef and over-stuffed pastrami sandwiches. According to Carnegie Deli, at least one pound of meat goes into every sandwich that is ridiculously piled high and served with pickles. The restaurant is also made famous by celebrities who frequent the place such as Adam Sandler. It was also used as a location for a scene in one of Woody Allen's hits, "Danny Rose." The walls are also lined up with autographed pictures of other celebrities who have dined there since it was established in 1937.
Magnolia Bakery (Midtown, Upper West Side, and Greenwich)
When it started out as a humble coffee shop cum bakery, no one ever imagined that people would now be waiting in line just to have a bite of Magnolia Bakery's heavenly cupcakes with sprinkles and butter cream frosting. Magnolia Bakery's popularity soared to even greater heights because of an episode of "Sex and the City" which was partly shot there. Some quarters even credit the coffee shop for making the cupcakes popular around the country.
Nathan's Famous (Coney Island, Brooklyn)
In 1916, Nathan's Famous was opened by Nathan Handwerker, a Polish immigrant as a simple hotdog stand in Coney Island. Today, the company has gone international with its hotdogs and other products enjoying tremendous sales worldwide. Through the years, Nathan's hotdogs have gained quite a reputation and notoriety, what with loyal patrons such as Al Capone. Even President Roosevelt served the famous hotdogs to the Royal Couple of England during their state visit in 1939.
Grimaldi's (Brooklyn)
Originally situated under the Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldi's pizzas are said to be worth waiting for. In fact, a lot of people are willing to wait in line for 2 hours just to have a chance to dine in one of the most famous NYC restaurants. Most consumer surveys likewise rank it as NYC's number 1 pizzeria. In a city known the world over for great pizzas, this is quite a distinguished honor.
