When people say the words "hip hop music," the first things that could ever come to their mind would have to be those mainstream artists that they usually hear on the radio like Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, and Ice-T. Since then, newer artists have continued to make new attempts in order to create a huge impression in the media, but beneath the image that they portray exists an immeasurable depth of socio-cultural impact that has remained in every person's mind and in every piece of society since the inception of the said genre.
In a broad sense, hip hop music is a collective form of genre in music that revolves around its four core components: break dancing, emceeing, graffiti works of art and turntables and DJs. Break dancing is a form of freestyle dance that harmonizes with the beat patterns and tempo of modern hip hop songs. Emceeing refers to a kind of rap style that involves impromptu vocal passages and aggressive tonalities that define the presence of hip hop. Graffiti works involve strong and expressive gestures made by hip hop spray painters that portray a rebellious mood of imagery. Lastly, turntables and DJs are the elements that make up the backbeat of all rap artists as they sing their verses. With all these elements, how did this kind of genre change the world?
Arguably one of the heaviest influences of hip hop music in the world today is its core formation of a whole new type of linguistics that is almost exclusive to its artists. In other words, hip hop artists have created a set of slang words that have almost always been associated with their music. For example, the addition of suffixes like "-jizz" or "izzle" in some words has been commonly practiced by a world-renowned hip hop artist named Snoop Dogg. Words like "homie", "crib", and "dog" are also usual words included in most rap songs of today that are often copied, popularized, and parodied in pop culture. Aside from the words themselves, rap artists have used their songs to convey numerous themes and images that have been famous among African Americans, which usually involve anti-White and anti-society passages. One notable group called Public Enemy has created numerous songs that have exposed societal defects as based from the members' own experiences.
Being somehow related to the aggressive lyrics of hip hop, one of the most recognizable characteristics that have solidified the impact of the genre to society is its rampant use of profane words. Due to this, many rapping artists have faced widespread criticism and lawsuits that reject the whole idea of including bad words in their lyrical compositions.
Arguably, one of the most profound impressions in society made by hip hop music involves the non-stop media attention of its artists. While most media sources have incorporated the hip hop subculture in their movies, magazines, and other forms, other companies made use of controversial methods of advertisement by bribing some hip hop artists in order to include brand names in their lyrical content.
While some aspects may be considered controversial in some degrees, the fact that hip hop music has created a huge impact in society could never be denied.
