While most people crave for commercial singles of today like those from 50 Cent, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Eminem, Nelly, and other artists, a huge number of them are not knowledgeable or even aware about the origins of their genre. This genre called hip hop music, as how the people of this world have come to refer to it since its inception, involves a broad range of musical influences, developments and progressions that have made it one of the most prominent genres in the world today.
Hip Hop music involves a vast range of concepts and ideologies that have made it one of the most recognizable genres in the planet. To start it off, the term "hip hop" actually came from two slang words: "hip," which was referred in African American dictionaries to as being well-informed about the trends of today, and; "hop," which refers to the bouncing movement made by rappers and hip hop artists as they go along with the beat. The combination of these two terms actually resulted from the antics of a certain man named Keith Wiggins, who was credited for coining the name of the genre. As such, he started the movement by working with DJs as they went on with their performances, which marked the spread of a new trend in music.
As the popularity of hip hop music spread the land like an epidemic, numerous artists like The Sugarhill Gang and Lovebug Starski have released singles and records that made use of rapping elements and DJ-driven beats. However, out of all those artists, one man named Afrika Bambaataa took the hip hop craze to unsurpassed popularity. He gave the genre a fresh face by defining the core elements of its musical direction: rapping, DJs, break dancing, and graffiti works.
However, one young man from the Southern part of the Bronx named Clive Campbell has been regarded and credited worldwide as being one of the major pioneers of hip hop music. Raised in Jamaica, at thirteen years old Clive, who goes by the name "Kool Herc," molded hip hop by incorporating his own ethnic roots. Through the combination of impromptu spoken words, funk-driven passages, and Jamaican beats and instruments with DJ equipment like turntables, samples and microphones, he opened the opportunity for newer generations of hip hop artists to conquer the world. In terms of beat innovations, DJs like Grand Wizard Theodore and Jazzy Jay redefined hip hop by making use of scratching techniques on their turntables in order to emulate break beats, which also marked the distinction of rap singles from other songs. A rapping technique specifically known as emceeing became also one of the major elements of hip hop by combining both rampant rhyming and in-your-face banters in its own form of music. Melle Mel was a rapper that has been credited for becoming one of the first self-proclaimed MCs in the history of music.
Were it not for these breakthroughs in the music industry, hip hop music of today would have never been possible or even universally commercialized in almost every corner around the world.
