Others think that hip hop is simply a music style but it isn't. Saying that it is merely another music style is one way of defining hip hop but the truth is that the word means so much more that. Hip hop can also be defined as a cultural movement which also encompasses DJing, graffiti writing and emceeing. This cultural movement was started in order to express the community's social freedom.

The movement started during the late 70s to the early 80s, continually expanding in popularity like other types of music. It isn't actually a music genre such as classical, jazz or black metal. It includes different styles of music such as rap, gangster, west coast, east coast, g-funk, Midwest, dirty south and the list moves on. Every style possesses a distinct feel to it and usually reflects the current events within the area of such community. Every style sounds differently from the other. One style called commercial hip-hop sounds almost the same to other styles and is themed about the society, making it stay popular.

This cultural movement and its music style have expanded all around the world in different societies. Asia, Germany, Australia, and France are just some places where the movement and the music style are present. The movement and the style have found their ways into different areas of our daily lives - concerts, commercials, movies and theater productions. People believing in such movement and style have already spread themselves into the internet, complete with forums, information about the latest music, latest news, gossips, downloads and other cool info about the style and the culture.

Forums about the culture can give lovers of this movement a chance to talk to other people of similar interests. Although the cultural movement originated to tell other people about the injustice in the African-American culture some decades ago, the movement has indeed grown into a lot more.

Our society has grown a lot compared to the past when cultural and racial injustices happen often. When the cultural movement started , their music frequently talked about those injustices and became rather political. As the years went by, the music style was still political but has started to gear towards party music also. During the 90s, gangster music and "bad rap" was born, talking about different politicians in their lyrics.

The bad publicity didn't stop the movement's victory. In the early 21st century, hip hop has started to mix other music styles and became widely accepted by people from all areas of the globe. Such phenomenon can't be music alone, or a simple culture, or a movement. It has already become a part of everyone's lives, whether people approved of it or not. While other cultures and music already possess a heavy group of supporters, the thought that something can be born, known and become accepted in just a short amount of time is really moving.
