Hip hop is described as a cultural movement which started in the late 70s. However, it has become more famous for its effect on music in a genre named after the movement. The movement originated in Bronx, New York and spread quickly among African-Americans along with some influence from Latin-American people. The cultural movement has expanded from just being an underground approach into becoming a major style all around the world. As the years flew by, it became popularized and commercialized especially in the US.
The 4 pillars of the movement include graffiti art, DJing, break dancing and rapping. Sometimes, the following aspects are also categorized under the movement: beat boxing, street knowledge, slang and street entrepreneurship.
The music of this cultural movement combines several iconic elements more noticed in rapping and DJing, with other features like sampling, beat boxing and juggling beats in turntables. In the early evolution of the music, DJs are known to make their own new music by looping parts of songs, emphasizing the most interesting percussive patterns in each song. The beats are also combined with a rhythmic and chanting singing style, now known as rapping.
Beat boxing is a musical movement that initiated from some machine-oriented DJs, mimicking the breaks and sounds of musical instruments with the use of their own vocal cords. The first drum machines were known as beat boxes and imitating the sounds of these drums were then referred to as beat boxing. As time went on, beat boxing became more complicated. It soon tried to imitate even more complex instruments and also involved layering beats on top of each other with the help of a type of overtone singing. Popular beat boxers also learned the art of singing while beat boxing.
While hip hop music became popular, the movement also initiated its very own way of dancing, often referred to as break dancing. The dance started in the South Bronx alongside the growth of the music and is also known as Bboying. The dance incorporates wild body movements which are amazingly controlled; it is a dancing style that emphasizes strength and lively body movements, matching the exact beats made by DJs and beat boxers. This form of dance is frequently done in a battle form having competitors face off by demonstrating their moves and trying to up each other.
Graffiti also became part of a important cornerstone of hip hop also, enabling the movement to combine different aspects of the culture in a visually-stimulating manner. Even though graffiti has started a long time ago and was in fact quite popular in the US among gangs and activists in the earlier 60s, the movement seized it and remodeled it to make a visually different style. It made use of bubble letters. Graffiti art was then considered as the visual form of the cultural movement, in the same way as break dancing is its physical form.
In the later years, the cultural movement has become more commercialized while trying to keep its independent and free spirit. Although ad campaigns use the proper features of the movement, the aspects of their slang go down into a society who doesn't understand their origin.
