The new drama from FX is from Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, the producers of Glee. It was recently screened for TV critics at the Los Angeles Summer TV Press Tour, comments on which are discussed below. There might not be any celebrity gossip here; this is more of a review of that first episode.
The American Horror Story cast includes Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Dylan McDermott (The Practice), Jessica Lange (you know who she is), and Dennis O'Hare (True Blood). Accompanying this veritable feast of talents are a plethora of suspense, psychos, screams, sex, murder, death, baby killing, and more murder.
The Glee producers called it a psycho-sexual thriller. It revolves around a family that moves into a large L.A. house that is (of course) haunted, and which is a site of numerous murders. Britton and McDermott's characters are a couple having some trust and fidelity issues, for McDermott has been previously caught by Britton doing it with a student of his. This tension is emotionally brought to the fore by the appearance of the mysterious housekeeper, played by Francis Conroy (Six Feet Under), who has worked for all the previous dead owners of the house.
The problem is that when this housekeeper works and the wife looks at him, he appears as his normal, male self. However, when it is McDermott looking at him, he sees a young seductive woman in a maid's uniform. It is as if McDermott is having unreal visions. This is a common feature of the pilot episode, the constant shifting of points of view that seems to deliberately confuse the viewer.
Now McDermott's character, who is a psychiatrist, runs an in-house clinic at this haunted house. His first patient turns out to be a psychotic teenager that rattles his head violently, speaks in tongues, and is quite violent. Unfortunately, the couple's teenage kid is madly in crush with this psychotic boy of a patient.
As the episode drags on, the couple soon attempts to achieve their lost flame and intimacy by having a bit of spontaneous and relatively rough lovemaking. There is this real/unreal quality to these particular scenes, and many parts are included in this category.
All in all, American Horror Story, at least in its pilot episode, is a delirious wild ride in terms of characterization and portrayal of scenes. It has a general setting of weirdness; a horror genre for the small screen that is jam-packed with details, and an intense ride that consistently maintains a scary feel throughout the whole episode. It has a general air of moral rottenness and ugliness of emotion permeating it, which, if the writers and producers are not careful, may lead to an overall depressing experience for the American Horror Audience. It must at least maintain an exhilarating feel no matter what, even if it is indeed a horror genre.
It should at the very least spawn some good celebrity talk and celebrity gossip. And if the first episode is any indication, this show could have this fairly accurate title: The Opposite of Glee.
