When people talk about fashion, discussions often center on high fashion. This means signature labels are always the ones that gain attention. Magazines usually focus on what these popular name brands offer giving only few spaces for other styles like street fashion. This is in a way understandable because you do not expect people who favor this type of fashion sense to read fashion magazines. But this does not mean that there is no market for such. If you think about it, this market is probably bigger than the one that supports expensive signature clothing.
In the past, street fashion was largely influenced only by what is happening on the streets. It was mainly influenced by the culture of those people who spend most of their time there. Skateboarders for example have a big part in shaping this fashion style. Their lifestyle dictated what they wore. Oversized shirts and pants for example were preferred because of their natural need to move a lot. They obviously chose pieces of clothing that allowed them to move freely. They preferred them over constricting clothes which prevented them from doing the stunts that they create.
The 1980s nostalgia also had its effect on street fashion. This period brought about the popularity of bright colors. The use of graphic prints also became famous because of this. This period also brought about a culture where people wanted to make a stand. Thus, they used fashion to express their individuality. Printing statements and logos that show their sentiments became the trend. Printing logos was also used to express their loyalties to certain groups, ideologies or even icons. The indie band scene for example influenced t-shirt designs then.
But just like other fashion styles, the street fashion is also changing in several aspects. For example, in the past, black and other neutral colors were outshined by bright colors. Now, many street wear supoporters are using them too. In some circles, they are actually the preferred colors. But the bright colors did not totally fade. They remained in the designs and logos placed on the t-shirts.
The preference people give to large sizes is also changing in a way. Shorter shirts are now being used because of the influence of popular celebrities. They also do this to show off decorated accessories like belts and chains. Some also wear short shirts to allow others to take a peek into their undergarments.
In the past, followers of street wear fashion say that their style is their reaction to the style of clothes sold in malls. It was as if they formed a counterculture to commercially available designs. However, these days, street wear fashion can now be bought in malls as well. They are also mass produced which is contrary to the individualism which they advocated in the past. Also in contradiction with this individualism is the fact that there are designer labels that are also producing the same styles of street wear which they patronize. Some of them are also collaborating with other famous labels to get a better market.
Street fashion has evolved quite a lot, but the good thing is it has maintained the basics that actually brought its existence.
