In the wake of the death of Amy Winehouse, entertainment news stories have been focusing on the issue of celebrity addiction. Ironically enough, Winehouse s toxicology results revealed that there were no illegal substances in her body at the time of her death. However, there are still plenty of infamous celebrity addicts out there, many of whom have thankfully cleaned up their acts.
Lindsay Lohan is presently one of the most notorious celebrity addicts. From being a promising young star that appeared in films like Mean Girls and Freaky Friday, Lohan has spent the past few years in and out of rehab to deal with her alcohol and drug addiction. In 2007, she pleaded guilty for driving under the influence and misdemeanor cocaine use and has since been in and out of the courts for repeatedly violating the terms of her suspended sentence. Ironically enough, the entertainment news recently reported that LiLo's friends reportedly warned her that she could end up like Amy Winehouse if she didn t change her ways, a story that was later debunked.
Charlie Sheen seems a permanent fixture of the entertainment news these days, not just because of his tweets but also because of his generally shocking behavior. Sheen has a history of drug use, and was even hospitalized for an overdose in 1998. However, his addiction problems seemed to come to a head in 2011 when he was fired from his hit show Two and a Half Men following disclosures of cocaine use and wild partying with porn stars. Recently, however, his brother Emilio Estevez claimed that Sheen had reformed and was ready to focus on his career.
Britney Spears s addiction problems began after her divorce from Kevin Federline, with whom she had two sons. Following a series of incidents of erratic behavior, Spears checked herself into a series of rehabilitation facilities throughout 2007 and even lost physical custody of her children to Federline. However, she seems to have successfully recovered, as her new album Femme Fatale has received positive reviews and has been selling strongly.
Kate Moss has been hounded by allegations of cocaine use which have never been definitively proven. The accusations first surfaced following photos in the tabloid Daily Mirror that reportedly showed her sniffing cocaine. As a result of the consequent scandal she lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Chanel and Burberry. However, her career successfully survived the scandal and remains one of the UK s most popular models. Recently, Dior even played around with the cocaine allegations by getting her to promote its Addict lipstick.
Whitney Houston is another star who seems to have trouble overcoming her addiction. After being one of the biggest music stars of the 1990s and launching a successful acting career, she started being dogged by drug allegations in 2000 when marijuana was found in her baggage at an airport in Hawaii. Despite denying rumors of addiction, Houston went into rehabilitation in 2004 and again in 2005 before declaring herself drug-free in 2009. However, in May 2011 the entertainment news reported that she once again checked herself into an outpatient treatment program for substance abuse.
