Can e cigarettes cause cancer? An e-cigarette (henceforth, e-smoke), is a digital device meant to simulate smoking paper and tobacco cigarettes. It is intended to mitigate the harmful effects of smoking tobacco in a paper wrapper. A cartridge holding the fluid flavor in some kind of absorbent material is mixed with an electric vaporizer and a battery to form the electronic cigarette. The cartridge is commonly disposable but may be refillable as well. Some are made to take liquid directly into the atomizer.

The fluid is atomized with ultrasonic or heat. Generally the atomizer heats the fluid with a heating element. These heating elements usually include a filament in some kind of container. As the filament is used, it becomes ineffective due to the buildup of sediment. Some producers have a disposable filament design so that they can be easily replaced.

It is required to power the device in some way, so a battery compartment has to be included. This makes up the bulk of the device and usually includes some type of rechargeable battery. The batteries could then be charged via an AC outlet, a device fed by a computer's USB ports or a car charger.

Using a hygroscopic liquid base like propylene glycol, flavors from chocolate to Marlboro are infused. Hygroscopic substances, which are employed in asthma inhalers and nebulizers, are used because they attracted water molecules and help to build a mist that may be inhaled. The fluid may also include nicotine, but it is not necessary and cartridges of differing strengths are in general available.

Known carcinogens, like tobacco-specific nitrosamines were discovered to be present in a number of brands of e-smoke containing nicotine. All the same, even when these carcinogens were found they were found in very low levels. Without nicotine these carcinogens might not be present at all. Boston University's School of Public Health conducted a study which concluded that electronic smoking implements were much safer than real cigarettes.
