Granite, slate, quartz, and marble are the most common stone choice for bathroom and kitchen countertops. These stones are found in the earth, diamond saws are used to cut the stone, polished to a glassy shine, and shipped all over the world. Stone exists everywhere and is never the same, even processed from the same location. Stone is porous and dense and must be sealed to prevent staining. It is sometimes difficult to shape and work, though the modern advances in technology make it easier to polish and cut the stones near the quarries. These products can be purchased many places online and installed yourself or their professional staff will come out and put them in for you.
Granite is a popular stone for countertops; it is formed by activity of volcanoes and is extremely hard. Its beauty evolves from crystals of mica, quartz, and feldspar that are trapped in the rock. Consistent granite has identical patterns throughout and variegated granite has added character of veins that vary and makes matching sections more difficult. Every six months your granite countertops should have a sealer applied to keep them from becoming stained.
Slate and soapstone are less porous than granite and also much softer. Slate is found in ancient sea beds and has a solid black, green, or gray hue. Soapstone is made of mineral talc with a similar color and contains a little bit of quartz. Both types can chip and scratch easily along the edges especially. These marks can be left to add some character to your countertops or they can be sanded to look new again. If you combine a sink of slate or soapstone to match your counter, a refined, sleek look can be created. A periodic mineral oil application will keep these stones glowing!
Limestone and marble are soft and warm and are easily stained by food acids, but some homeowners prefer marble surfaces for rolling out their pastry dough and serious bakers will add a section of marble for this purpose. Marble is highly polished similar to granite; limestone has a matte finish. To prolong the life of marble, it needs a little bit more maintenance than granite. Even though it is durable and elegant it needs care, cleaning, and conditioning to preserve the beauty and prevent damage. Marble countertops stain easily if you spill oil or liquids, vinegar, citrus juice, or cleaning solutions, which will damage the surface. Take precautions with your marble as soon as it is installed so that you can eliminate problems from the beginning. Wipe up spills immediately on the marble, use coasters under bottles or glasses, use trivets or mats when placing hot foods on the marble, and follow periodic and daily cleanup routines.
