Granite is an ideal stone for kitchen countertops because it is easy to care for and very hygienic. Marble is harder to take care of unless you get one that is honed with no shine but is more manageable. A honed marble countertop can be scrubbed with soap pads, bleach, and other abrasives without damaging the marble. Rinse and dry it well with a soft cloth. Don't clean up stains like blood or spilled milk with hot water; doing so will make the stain worse.
Recommended cleaners for your new countertops are Dawn, Formula 409, Dow Bathroom Cleaner, Glass Plus, Fantastic, and some mild kinds of soap are fine to use if you rinse it off completely. Abrasive or acidic cleaners can mar the surface; drain cleaners that contain lye can do permanent damage to your countertop. If drain cleaner gets spilled, wipe up immediately and rinse with water several times. Food, textile, and hair dyes may permanently stain if not wiped up with dish soap or other cleaner immediately. Rust removers have harsh chemicals that quickly cause damage to the countertop, wash thoroughly with mild detergent and rinse well. Abrasive pads and steel wool will also cause damage, don't store the pads on the countertop, the metal will rust and leave a stain. If you spill toilet bowl cleaner, the harsh chemicals can also permanently damage the countertop.
Mixing a mild cleaner with baking soda can help remove difficult stains like tea or coffee; make it into a paste. Using a stiff brush scrub the area taking care to not scratch or damage the finish. Stubborn stains might require the use of bleach or polish remover on a cotton ball, gently rub for two minutes. Prolonged use of bleach can cause discoloration, so always be sure to rinse several times after cleaning! Failure to do this will most certainly damage the countertop.
Chemical ingredients should never be used on surfaces, such as muriatic acid, oil of vitriol, oleic acid, oleum, hydrogen chloride, rust remover, lye, pumice, or caustic soda. Sharp objects will also damage surfaces, lowering stain resistance and marring the beauty of the laminate.
If your countertops are made of stainless steel, it is advised to use the wax-based type of aerosol cleaner once a week. This is to prevent smudge marks and fingerprints that sometimes come with using the stainless steel material. Don't use an oil to clean the surface because lint and debris can cling and stick to the area. So whether you live in a modern house, country cottage, or a city loft, bold hues, or soft natural stones, knowing how to care for your new countertops, you can enjoy your kitchen. Whatever style you choose, you can clean, cook, and entertain without any worries!
