When we step into a kitchen, most times what immediately grabs out attention are the countertops. This could go either way for just as a fabulous kitchen countertop is sure to attract attention, in the same way a horrible countertop, full of stains and scratches and peeling in some areas will attract attention. Therefore to give the house greater value and add to the general elegance of the whole house, the kitchen should not be neglected. To give the kitchen a quick facelift, changing the countertops will do wonders. However, because there are so many kitchen countertop materials in the market, it can be difficult to make a decision. A little overview on the top types of kitchen countertops should help a bit.
Granite
Granite has always been a favorite material for kitchen countertops. Its aesthetic value alone has earned it a place in most kitchens. In addition to its beauty, it is easy to maintain and is incredibly durable. It helps that granite is a stone that is second only to diamond in hardness; this means that it is scratch resistant, heat resistant, stain resistant and pretty much most stuff resistant. The issue most people face with granite countertops is that it is really expensive, but that is only if you are making use of custom made granite kitchen countertops. There are less expensive alternatives like modular granite countertops which are not as thick as the custom made type, and granite tiles which are easy to install. Moreover, granite is becoming less expensive each day so it is a really good choice to consider.
Ceramic Tiles
These seem to be the most common in a lot of kitchens reason being that they are reasonably durable and not as expensive as some other types of kitchen countertops. They are also available in different colors and varieties making it possible to have options. The problem with them though is that they crack easily and start to chip in certain parts. Also, the grout lines quickly become stained. However, with sufficient care, they could last for quite a long time and besides, they are also heat resistant and easily cleaned.
Wood
Because of its rich tones, wood countertops immediately give a warm and homely feel to the kitchen without detracting from its elegance. Wood is not water resistant though and if not properly cared for, can be damaged by water and moisture over time. Also, it scratches easily and needs to be oiled or sealed regularly. However, wood kitchen countertops are easy to clean and can always be sanded and resealed to give it a fresh look.
Laminates
Laminates are great and have enjoyed a lot of popularity because they are inexpensive and really easy to maintain. They come in several colors and textures and there is a vast array to choose from. Laminates are not scratch resistant though and scratches cannot be hidden. Therefore if you decide to go with laminates, don't buy dark colors as they show up scratches very easily.
There are so many choices from which to pick your kitchen countertop materials and each have their strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, you would need to take your lifestyle into consideration, whether you entertain and how often you make use of the kitchen, before you go ahead and make your choice.
