Labels have many application. They identify, they tag, they provide warnings, they advertise, and in the case of digital labels, they provide security and ways of monitoring inventory. Labels have been around since the 1800s. As soon as printing became available , merchants wanted to label their products and catch the eye of consumers . Labeling also had other uses aside from identification and advertisement.
When merchandisers discovered they could use labels to track inventory by using bar codes, labels became an even more integral part of manufacturing. Today, you would hardly see a product that does not have a bar code. And with the advent of advanced technology such as RFID tagging and security printing, inventory monitoring just got even easier. Today, manufacturers and businesses can hardly do without labels. They're an essential part of every business.
How labels are made
Making labels start with the design process. An artwork, logo, or text is selected for a label. Then a design and layout for the text and art is finalized, along with the colors to be used in the label printing. The design is then given to a labeling manufacturer and the manufacturer prints the label by bulk or by however many was ordered by the client. Once printed, it is covered in a coating or in laminates to make it last longer and become more durable. It is then either cut separately, supplied on a roll, or by sheets.
How labels get attached
Labels can be attached through adhesives, rivets, shrink wraps, yarn, twine, or glue. Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) or what we commonly know, as stickers are the most common way labels get attached. There are six types of PSAs available. These are permanent, peelable, ultra-peelable, frost fix, high tac, and static cling. Permanent adhesives are labels that will typically be hard to remove once attached. Trying to remove one will cause tearing or damaging of the label.
Peelable labels are as its name suggests, are peelable. While the adhesives in peelable labels are not as strong as in permanent labels, they're still strong enough that the label can be used again. Ultra-peelable adhesives are labels with very light adhesion. Designed for book covers and glass, these labels usually lose adhesiveness once peeled off from their original surface. Frost fix are labels used in products that endure freezing conditions; high tac, for dirty or rough surfaces; and static cling, for windows and decorations.
Where labels are printed
Labels are normally printed on paper. However, labels can also be printed on latex, foil, film, fabric, metal, and plastic. The materials where labels are printed are called stock types. A label's adhesive or attachment type depends on the stock type used.
New Technology
Advanced technology has made it possible to use labels to improve security and inventory tracking. RFID chips can be imbedded in labels, radioactive isotopes can be used to permit tracking, and security printing, embossing, holography, and bar codes can all be used to allow labels to provide greater security and better tracking.
