What Are the Causes of Hair Loss?
Hair loss is when your hair thins or bald patches begin to show up on your scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or on other body parts that had hair. It is normal for a person to lose from 50-100 scalp hairs daily (a person has about 100,000 scalp hairs on average). So it is not always something to worry about when you see a few hairs per day fall out. However, if it is more than 100, you might be experiencing hair loss for one of the reasons below.
Heredity
The most frequent cause for hair loss is simply heredity. This is referred to by medical professionals as androgenetic alopecia, or male/female pattern baldness. About 95% of men and 70% of women who experience this can blame it on heredity. It is much more common in men than women, and it normally starts around the age of 30. This problem affects about 80 million people in the U.S., according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
One of the most common treatments for this problem is Rogaine (minoxidil topical), a topical drug to stimulate hair growth and slow balding. Another treatment is a pill taken daily that contains finasteride. This is a drug that blocks the formation of the active male hormone in the hair follicle.
Heredity baldness can be inherited from either the mother's or father's family, and it may or may not skip generations.
Hair Disorders
Some of the hair disorders that can cause loss of hair are:
• Cicatricial alopecia: an inflammation that scars and damages the hair follicles.
• Telogen diffluvium: acute hair loss that is caused by stressors, such as birth, illness, and death. Usually occurs two or three months after the stressful event. The hair follicles enter the telogen phase early, which causes them to stop growing hairs.
• Trichotillomania: psychological disorder where people tug out their own hair.
• Ectodermal dysplasia : inherited disease that damages the formation of the ectoderm.
• Alopecia areata: an autoimmune disease where the body attacks body hair; it can cause all body hair to fall out. This problem afflicts 4.7 million people in the U.S. Many of these people are children. This type of hair loss can be limited to bands around the scalp margins, the loss of all scalp hair except along the scalp margins, the total loss of all scalp hair, and the loss of all scalp and body hair.
Medicines and Drugs
Drugs that can cause this problem include the following:
• Anti-acne drugs
• Blood thinners
• ACE inhibitors for high blood pressure
• Gout drugs
• Anti-malaria drugs
• Cholesterol-lowering drugs
• Parkinson's Disease drugs
• Many anti-cancer drugs
• Birth control pills
• Steroids
• Radiation and chemotherapy
Hormones
Normal hormonal changes in the body also can cause this problem. Such changes include child birth and menopause.
Other Diseases
Hair loss can further be due to these diseases and disorders:
• Diabetes
• Hyperthyroidism
• Hypothyroidism
• Ringworm (concentrated in the scalp)
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
Every Day Causes
Another very possible cause for hair loss is using too much hair cleaning and styling products (curling and straightening irons, hair sprays, shampoos, hair colorants, hair bands). Also, poor nutrition, including deficiencies in iron or protein, or too much vitamin A, can cause this problem.
