Roofs are multilayered structures. The materials used will vary from structure to structure depending on architectural design, weather patterns, budget, the installers own practices, and aesthetics. With so many variables it's impossible to say that there is one acceptable way of installing a roof. There are however basic components that are common to every roofs structure.
The skeleton of a roof is the truss. Trusses are the wooden beams laid out into a framework that supports the roof. Trusses distribute the weight of the roof so that the load is not completely placed upon the exterior walls of the building. The manner in which these are laid out will depend upon a few things such as the types and amounts of stress the roof may experience and the size of the rooms or open areas within the home. Trusses can be assembled on site or prefabricated. Unless the home has an unusual design, prefabricated trusses are usually the preferred choice as making trusses on site is labor intensive. Trusses are always triangular in shape as this shape provides the best structural stability.
Rafters are the beams of wood that incline toward the apex of the structure. They rest on top of the buildings walls are usually joined to other rafters at one end and hanging over exterior wall at the other. This extension allows extra protection to the windows and doors by diverting water out and away from them and the home's foundation.
Decking or sheathing is name given to the layer of plywood set upon the rafters and which roof coverings will be nailed to. Although plywood continues to be a popular option, OSB or Oriented Strand Board is another option. This type of sheathing is environmentally friendly as it is made from small trees that grow rather fast.
Underlay or tar paper is the next layer of the roof structure. This layer consists of a heavy felt paper and it is the surface to which shingles will be attached. Although felt paper is cheaper, the alternative of synthetic underlayment paper is available. Its advantages are that it offers better resistance to moisture or tearing but it will cost more.
The final layer is of course the tile, slate, or shingle chosen by the property owner. Each type of material will have its own unique installation technique. Aside from aesthetics, this outermost layer of the roof has an all important job of being the final layer of protection to your home against the elements of weather. Regardless of the material used, all outer layers require at least yearly inspection for cracks, rot, insect activity, mold, curling, or damage.
Roofing designs and materials vary widely. When installing a new roof, make sure you partner with a qualified installer or contractor even if you plan to tackle the project yourself. The knowledge and experience these professionals have to offer could save you thousands of dollars in damages or repairs.
