A tile floor is the perfect flooring solution for many homeowners. Other homeowners prefer hardwoods, laminates or carpeting. There is no one right answer for everyone. It all depends on what works for you. Tile has its advantages, but there are a few disadvantages too.
Advantages
1. Tile is water resistant.
For many people, this is the primary reason for getting tile. You can have tile in your kitchen or bathroom with no worries about what will happen to the integrity of the floor when water is spilled on it frequently. A tile floor will stay solid and sound and it will not come up either, as long as it is properly grouted and sealed when it is installed. A professional installer will make sure this is the case.
2. Tile is easy to clean.
Most tiles clean up nicely with a little soap and water. If the tile is in a shower floor, it might need a special cleaner to avoid getting mold and mildew. Otherwise, its surface is solid enough to keep spills from penetrating into the tile. The mess stays on the surface until you clean it up. The same cannot be said for carpeting or even solid hardwood. Flooring that soaks up stains is more difficult to take care of than a tile floor can be.
3. Tile is quiet.
When you walk on a tile floor, you will not hear a squeak unless the subfloor has not been adequately prepared prior to installation. The tile itself makes no noise. If you were to walk across the room in your stocking feet, there would be no sound heard from the pressure of your weight.
4. Tile is durable.
A carefully installed tile floor can last a very long time if it is well maintained. The tile itself does not show age because it does not fade over time. As long as it is intact, a tile retains its size, shape and color longer than most other flooring types. It does not take on odors like a carpet or scratch like a solid hardwood floor.
Disadvantages
1. Tiles can break.
Tiles are hard, but they can break. If something heavy and solid is dropped on them, especially from a height, they can shatter and break. The answer to this is to have your installer set aside a few extra tiles so that any broken tiles can be replaced over the years. If the installer has done a good job, fitting in one single tile should not be too hard of a job.
2. Tile can be cold.
The feel of tile can be very cold. While this is nice in the summertime, it can be uncomfortable in the winter. One solution is to have a floor heating system installed, and an expert installer can help you get that done. In fact, hiring a professional might be the best choice you make when it comes to getting a new tile floor.
