A tile floor can be a beautiful addition to any kitchen, bath or living area. Doing the installation requires some skill and experience, along with some knowledge about tile flooring. An expert flooring installer can explain the process and do the work for you. Here is a little of what is involved.
Preparing the Floor
No matter where you are going to put the tile floor, you will need to make sure the existing floor is ready to accept the installation. You cannot glue tiles down on a dirty or uneven surface. If you try to put tiles down on a surface that is not stable, your grout can crack and your tiles can break as you walk on them.
The way you prepare the floor depends on the type of floor you have in the beginning. Subfloors should be rigid and at least 1 inch thick. If they are not, you might have to do some nailing, shimming, bridging between joists or add underlayment. Concrete fiberboard should be used if the tile floor will be in a moist environment.
Tile can be laid on a concrete floor, as long as it is even and clean. You might have to fill in holes or gaps, and you might have to sand down high spots with a belt sander. It can be difficult to look at a floor and see whether it is even or not until you start laying the tile. An experienced installer can make those determinations beforehand.
Placing the Pattern
One of the steps in laying a tile floor is choosing a pattern for the tiles. You might have tiles of different colors and/or designs, but even if they are all exactly the same they need to be arranged in some pattern on the floor. First, you have to decide on a design. If you are using various colors or designs, you will need to map out the floor so that you know where each tile will be placed. Next, the floor must be measured to find the centers to line up the tile pattern on the floor. A professional installer can work with you to get the design you choose with all the precision you desire.
Installing the Tile Floor
The final installation step is to actually glue down the tiles. Work from the starting point of the center reference you marked when setting up the pattern. Spread an area of tile adhesive where you are going to lay the tile. Make sure you have just enough adhesive that it will adhere and not so much that it will ooze out everywhere. Put in spacers if you need them, but take them out as soon as the tiles around it are placed. After the tiles are set in place, the grouting begins.
Installing a tile floor takes experience and skill. It is not a very good do it yourself project unless you are a remodeler in your working hours. You will save yourself the trouble of having an incorrectly installed floor if you hire a professional to do the work for you.
