Scrolls is a turn-based strategy game that combines elements of board games, trading card games, and tactical strategy games into one epic, complex and competitive online multiplayer game. While this game might not seem anywhere near as unique as Mojang's first game Minecraft, Scrolls is exceptional because it is trying to breathe a breath of fresh air into a genre that has seen very few new or innovative aspects in the past few years. Games such as Magic: The Gathering have been around for a long time and are exactly the same as when they first started out. There are high expectations for the strategy game and only time will tell if it can live up to its massive potential. Here is some background information about the game and how it will be played.
The concepts that make Scrolls so special were thought up long before development of the game started. Five years ago Markus Persson and his friend Jakob Porser (both of whom are fans of the collectible card game genre) started talking about the common flaws in existing collectible/trading card games and how they could improve them. They both thought that a superior game could be created if these flaws were fixed and some of their other ideas were added. Now that the popularity of Minecraft has provided them with lots of funding, several employees and a large community of gamers, they can now make that game a reality. The game's name, is Scrolls.
Before playing the game, it is important to note that each Scroll is made to represent a particular structure, creature, or spell. These Scrolls are purchased, collected, traded and fought for as each player tries to continually improve the quality of the Scrolls in their deck. Once you have enough scrolls, you can use them to battle an opponent. Winning a battle depends on how good your Scrolls are and the strategies you use when playing them. One of the advantages that Scrolls has over traditional collectible card games is that it can track the health, spells and other statistics for each card. For example, it would be much harder to track the health of a poisoned creature (decrease of one health point per turn) in a pen-and-paper card game.
Scrolls can be played in either single or multiplayer mode and the aim of the game is to kill your opponent's creatures by positioning and manoeuvring your Scrolls strategically. The game play is similar in many ways to that of chess, and will even be played on a board-like surface. Scrolls is definitely a one of a kind game and even though Minecraft is still being developed, lovers of trading card games are anxious to see what the game will be like and what Mojang has in store for them.
Even though Scrolls is in very early development, it is already playable and a buzz has been building around this game for some time now. It has the potential to be the best online trading card game ever released and strategy card game players are hoping that it will be the innovative creation they have been waiting for.
