Chainsaw is a portable mechanical tool run by electricity, hydraulic power, compressed air and the usual two-stroke engine. The equipment is used for felling trees, bucking, and pruning and limbing by tree surgeons to fall trees, snags, harvest firewood and remove branches and foliage.
The gadget's history of origin was debatable but the first chainsaw resembling tool was created approximately around 1830 by Bernard Heine, a German orthopedist. The item constructed was called an osteotome which consists of linking chains with small cutting teeth on edges. The chain is moved around the guiding blade by rotating the sprocket wheel handle in order to cut bones.
CHAIN SAW PARTS FUNCTION AND DESCRIPTION
Chain saw parts are vital to the equipment as a whole with every piece playing its specific roles and functioning. The following are the essential chain saw parts:
Engine - usually a two-stroke gasoline (petrol) for internal combustion engine with a cylinder volume 30-120 cm3 or with an electric motor
Driving Mechanism - utilizes centrifugal clutch & sprocket
Guide Bar - an elongated bar with a rounded end made of wear resisting alloy steel with a length of 16-36 inches. The edge slot does the guiding of cutting chain. Also, the use of brush bows are made to buck logs and in clearing brush but now seldom utilized due to operation hazards.
Cutting Chain - the segments of the chain are crafted from riveted metal sections same as the bicycle chains except for the rollers. The cutting chain contains small sharp teeth/blades which is a chromium type steel plate and curved with two sharp cutting edges, the top plate and side plate. The component has also modifications of pitches & gauge where the pitch is referred to half of the length of any 3 consecutive rivets whereas the gauge pertains to the drive link thickness that fits to the guide bar. A conventional chain contains a single tooth on every drive link wherein in each tooth is built with a so called raker or depth gauge that controls the cutting depth at around 0.025". The presence of depth gauges are crucial for chain operation for a too much high depth will result to slow cutting and a too slow will cause a chainsaw to be uncontrollable and dangerous.
There are also miscellaneous chainsaw components such as a drive link, a small metal finger that helps in carrying the lubricating oil to the bar's surrounding area and to the drive sprocket of the engine inside the saw's body. On the other hand, the changes made on chainsaw such as chain brake systems, anti-vibration systems and better designed chains have cost a lot of benefits and safety to the chainsaw handlers.
