HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; three aspects of any building that are interrelated. Taken together, this technology is essential for comfort in any living condition regardless of if it is residential living or a commercial building. There are several HVAC systems which are used in different situations but when it comes to cooling a room, there are two main methods that are employed. This is either the forced air system or the radiant system.
Forced air systems are probably the most common HVAC systems in America. They make us of air to transfer heat or cooling, relying on vents and a network of ductwork to supply the heat or cooling to the different parts of a building. These systems require a filter and regular cleaning of the condenser and evaporator to keep out dust, allergens and other particles. For large buildings and industrial properties, this is the best heating and cooling option. There are basically three types of forced air systems which are the heat pump, which makes use of a condenser located outside and an air handler that is placed inside the building, to dispense air; the duel fuel system and the air conditioner and gas furnace combination. The last two employ the use of a heat pump coil and a gas furnace for heating and cooling with an outdoor thermostat for the duel fuel system.
Radiant cooling systems on the other hand, do not rely on air but on chilled water pipes to transfer cooling to different parts of a building. There are different methods of delivery when using radiant cooling systems and this include the use of panels, usually aluminum which can either be surface mounted on the attached to the walls, floors or ceilings of a building. They can also employ capillary tubes or concrete cores which make use of implanted tubes. To get the utmost efficiency out of a radiant cooling system, it should be ceiling mounted. However, it is not recommended for humid climates because of the risk of condensation. It is usually found in desert climates like Arizona. If a radiant cooling system is used in a climate that is humid, it would require dehumidification. One advantage that radiant cooling systems have over forced air cooling systems is that in using water to transfer cooling instead of air, they save a large percentage of energy which would have been used by fans to supply cooling.
Before you decide on what type of HVAC system works best for you, it is important to consult a HVAC expert who will advice you appropriately. The truth is that there are many factors to take into consideration and a HVAC specialist would be able to take all the variables and make them work for you.
