The market is saturated with air conditioning units therefore it is important to have an idea of what you want before you go shopping. Although there are other air conditioning units in the market suitable for a home, for homes that already have ductwork, central air conditioners are most suitable. Central air conditioners also come in different types and knowing the general types and what to expect from each would help in decision making.
Central air conditioners are either the split-system kind or they are packaged. Split-system central air conditioners have two parts; the condenser and compressor are usually contained in the part that is placed outdoors while the indoor part houses the evaporator. For some central air conditioners, the indoor part usually comes with a furnace or part of a heat pump. If you are thinking of getting a central air conditioner installed and you already have a furnace, a split-system would be the best option for you.
Packaged central air conditioners on the other hand have everything - the condenser, compressor and evaporator in one package. This is usually found on the roof of a house and is mostly used for office buildings. With packaged air conditioners, you would most likely get electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace which means that you get both central heating and cooling without necessarily needing to install a furnace inside the house.
When deciding on the type of central air conditioner you want to install in your house, a major consideration is the size of the cooling system which translates to the cooling capacity. While it sounds nice to have central air conditioners with large cooling capacity, in reality the size of the house is a very important consideration. If the cooling capacity of the central air conditioner is too large for the space it is meant to cool, that could be a problem.
It is also important to determine what the energy efficiency rate is. This can be done by looking at the SEER rating which is contained in a yellow label on the central air conditioning unit. The SEER rating stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency rate, which starts from a minimum of 10. The higher the number, the higher the energy efficiency rate is supposed to be. This is useful if you plan to use the central air conditioner for a very long time. Although a higher SEER rating system would naturally cost more to purchase, the long term benefits cannot be ignored.
Before you go ahead and purchase your central air conditioners, check to make sure that they are quiet units as neither you nor your neighbors would appreciate one that is noisy. The unit should also have a switch for fan-only to help you conserve energy during the night. An automatic-delay fan switch which turns off the fan after the compressor turns off would also be highly useful. Finally, contact a certified HVAC consultant for further advice.
