Air conditioning units come in different types, specifications and for different functions. In determining the type of unit to be used, the size and location of the house will be significant factors as well as the type of installation that would be required. Just as manufacturers of air conditioning units vary, the types of units available in the market also vary and it is only wise to become familiar with the different types of air conditioning units and their functions before going out to purchase one.
Packaged Air Conditioning Units
These can be found in window and split units or as central cooling units. The difference between these lies in the size of the space to be cooled. Window and split units are usually used for smaller spaces as their cooling capacity is very little. The central cooling unit on the other hand is often used for industrial areas or large office buildings which require its large cooling capacity. What is unique about these air conditioning units is that all the major components of the contained in a single casing and would typically be assembled on location. The large ones can be found mounted on the roofs of large buildings. Packaged units come with either water cooled condensers or air cooled condensers.
Evaporative Air Conditioning Units
Evaporative units are also known as swamp coolers and are more commonly used in arid climates. In the desert like temperatures of Arizona, evaporative air conditioning units might be more effective for cooling. Since these units cool temperatures by evaporating air, they might not be the best option for humid climates.
Ductless Air Conditioning Units
Some buildings do not come already fitted for an air conditioning system. When that happens, there are two choices; to get it retrofitted for installation or ductless air conditioning units. If making use of ductless air conditioning units to cool a house, several would have to be used as one can only effectively cool a single room unless it is an open house plan, then the cooling might seep to other corners. An advantage of ductless units is that due to the absence of a condenser, they are not as noisy as some other types. The disadvantage though is that they do not cool as efficiently.
Room Air Conditioning Units
The ductless units could also fall into this category. There are other units that are used mainly for room cooling and these could either be window units or portable units. The window units are typically mounted into an open window or an opening in the wall that has been made specifically for the unit. Portable units make use of a hose which ends outside the building and is used to exhaust heat. They can also be moved from one room to another.
Central Air Conditioning Units
The central air conditioning units are the most frequently used units and they cool effectively and efficiently. This type of unit requires ductwork as it functions by sending cool air through the ducts in all the rooms so that there is no noticeable temperature difference. If a house is not already fitted however, a retrofitting work would need to be done to get it ready for a central unit.
Before making a final choice on the type of air conditioning unit to use, consulting a HVAC specialist is necessary for specialized advice.
