However, it is useful to have some knowledge of air conditioner installation and the factors that affect it, even before you contact the HVAC expert.

Location

The location of the house is very important when it comes to installation of air conditioners. This is because the size of an air conditioning system is directly related to the temperature. When carrying out the sizing of an air conditioner, the relevant factor is the cooling capacity of the system. While a system with a low cooling capacity would make for an uncomfortable environment, one with a cooling capacity that is too high will not function properly, would be minimal efficiency and high energy consumption. It is important that the sizing of the system be done as accurately as possible and this means measuring the space that is to be cooled, taking into consideration the outside temperature. Accurate sizing is usually carried out by an expert.

Existing Facilities

Air conditioner installation will be affected by the existing facilities in the house particularly when it comes to the installation of a central air conditioner. This is because most central systems require an existing duct or pipe network through the house that will carry the cool air to different parts of the house. Where this is missing, there are two options when it comes to installation. A ductless air conditioner can be installed which eliminates the need for ducts and pipes and works just as well. On the other hand, ducts or pipes can be created before the installation and this is the preferred option if it is a new house. This is work for a professional and your HVAC expert would advice accordingly.

Type of Air Conditioner

The type of air conditioner will also have a heavy bearing on what goes into the installation of the system. For a window air conditioner for instance, the window would have to be measured and fitted. However, this is one installation that can be done as a DIY project; it just requires some muscle power. A split system on the other hand would require the expertise of a HVAC professional. The split system comes in two parts with the condenser/compressor located outside and the evaporator located inside the house. This would need to be connected to the general power of the house and would need someone with prior electrical experience. A central air conditioner, whether the split type or the packaged type is a whole different kettle of fish and installation of these should not be attempted except by a trained and certified expert.
