Laminate floor installation has been touted as one of the easiest do it yourself flooring projects around. While it may be easier than, say, a solid hardwood floor installation, there can still be problems. Before you rush into taking on this task, consider the following difficulties that can arise.
1. Snapping in the boards single-handedly can be nearly impossible at times.
If you are truly doing the laminate floor installation by yourself with no helpers, you will most likely have a hard time snapping the planks into position. They must be locked in for the entire length of the floor before they can be tapped into place. For a solo person, this can lead to some strange contortions as you try to hold one piece in place as you attach another piece. That is one reason why professional installers usually do not work alone.
2. There must be a precise amount of play between the walls and the laminate.
To allow for contraction and expansion due to temperature and humidity variations, laminate is installed with a small space around its perimeter. The frustrating thing about laminate floor installation can be that you have to cut the boards just exactly the right length and set them in at just the right space. If you allow too much extra room, there will be a gap under the moldings and door frames where the edges of the laminate will show. Of course, if you do not leave enough room, the floor will buckle and warp when the temperature and humidity levels in the room change over time.
3. The subfloor must be level.
If you try to do a laminate floor installation over an uneven floor, you will probably find it virtually impossible to complete. You can try to pop the planks into place all you want, but if a hump of uneven subfloor pushes against the bottom of the boards, the planks will pop back out every time. Even if you can make the planks snap into place, they will always creak after the floor is installed. A professional will know how to even up irregular floors so that the laminate can lay flat. Not only will his job go more smoothly after that, but you will get a better installation in the process.
4. The last row of planks may be hard to fit.
Someone who is not experienced in laminate floor installation might have trouble with that last row of planks. It is very unusual that the planks will fit the room precisely. Usually, only a partial width of the plank is needed on the last row. This involves ripping down the laminate board. An experienced installer will have no problems with this, but someone who has never done it before might. In fact, a professional who works at laminate floor installation on a regular basis will have the advantage every time. If you want the job done correctly and easily, an expert is your best option.
