Harsh abrasive cleaners can also be too strong for the granite countertop. It is best taken cared of with a small amount of warm water with a ph balanced dish washing liquid. Fine steel wool would be the solution to a gray or black mark on the surface left by pots and pans. A single sided razor blade could also just scrape it off. If cracked or chipped, a professional should be called in so repairs could be done.

Granite is an igneous stone and is very hard, but some minerals that compose it are actually very soft. This makes granite easy to scratch, break or chip off. Dragging of pots and pans on the surface can therefore ruin the beautiful surface.

Once a year, a penetrating sealant should be applied. Regular polishing will keep the finish gleaming. Use a penetrating sealant recommended by the supplier or the home builder. For stains and other defects, the home builders could be consulted on what to do.

Although granite has this very delicate characteristic, many homeowners still make granite their main choice for a countertop. This is because it is not only strong but it is extremely beautiful as well. A granite countertop never fails to give a kitchen unique colors and a sense of warmth and coziness. With proper care, granite countertops could serve your kitchen not just for a couple of years but for a lifetime.
