They are made from strong webbing connected to a tie down ratchet and hook. These straps are also used in shipping. Mostly, they are used in open transports but can also be used for enclosed trucks to keep the cargo in position whilst in transport.

With this heavy-duty task, tie down straps should be selected with care. No customer would like to have his baggage falling off or coming loose from the vehicle. When selecting tie down straps, it is important to consider not only the cargo, but the working environment is equally important. Under the size specs are length, width, and working load. The length and width should be compatible with the size of the cargo and the space in the vehicle where it would be strapped. The working load should be thought of in accordance to the weight of the cargo. It would be good to know that straps have a 3:1 design factor. This means that its breaking strength is three times its working load limit.

On the configuration category, tie down straps have type, material, and end. There are several types of straps available, but the most common types are the loops straps, also known as endless ratchet straps and the two-piece straps, known as a standard ratchet strap. Loop straps are a single strap that is looped around the cargo. Then, its two ends are brought together to be fastened and provide tension. Two-piece straps are a single construction made up of two pieces of webbing that are connected to one area surrounding the cargo and then, connected to each other. Materials include cotton, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and rubber. Each material has its own strengths and weaknesses and should be given thought in accordance to the environmental conditions that the straps would be put into. The end offers choices between E-Track, J-Hook, S-Hook, Chain Hook, Delta Ring, Flat Hook, Loop, Snap Hook and others. These ends are for use in different fastening needs. Qualified individuals can be consulted to determine which hook is ideal for a certain customer's needs.

It also pays to remember that good quality straps don't always have to be expensive but always be aware of cheap ratchet straps. Bargains are out there and users can get high quality straps at a considerably lower cost.
