Navigating the numbers in medical charts can be daunting, especially when you are unsure of what the real world health implications might be. In fact, it is often common to hear overly simplified version of what normal cholesterol levels are in the media and at the water cooler. Beyond just shooting for a single number, patients should work with their doctors to evaluate what is best for their personal situation and health background.
When going over test results, the first thing to find out is how the levels are measured. Different countries use different scientific units. In the United States, doctors tend to represent results in milligrams per deciliter. In Europe and Canada (along with much of the rest of the world), millimoles per liter are used instead. That will help avoid any shocking misreading of your test.
The media has covered the different types of cholesterol quite a bit in recent years. Due to that fact, most people are somewhat familiar with HDL (the "good" one) and LDL (the "bad" one). HDL means high-density lipoprotein and it should range from 40 to 60 mg/dL or 1.5 mmol/L. It can go up much more, and higher levels are better.
LDL (low-density lipoprotein), on the other hand, needs to be kept as low as possible. Numbers for men and women differ, but usually doctors recommend having between 70 mg/dL or 1.8 mmol/L and 129 mg/dL or 3.3 mmol/L. Patients with more elevated levels are in dangerous territory and should sit down with a physician to discuss strategies.
Less discussed are triglycerides, which can lead to higher risks for heart disease in patients. These float around the blood as a result of unused calories. The consensus is that anything under 150 mg/dL or 1.7 mmol/L is acceptable. Your doctor can advise you on how to lower these if needed.
Of course, these are just general ranges. You should always talk with your doctor and make sure you are talking a personalized approach to cholesterol management. This is especially true for LDL, since people with a family history of heart problems or other health issues might actually want to aim lower. This will change on a case-by-case basis.
Figuring out where you are in terms of normal cholesterol levels is not a walk in the park. It is, rather, a matter of being informed and working together with your physician. But the upside is that you are not necessarily breaking new ground. Millions of people deal with this problem all over the world and continue to live fulfilling lives.
