Chandeliers are intended to blend in a room as an integral part of the decoration. If it is too large, it will overpower the open space. On the other hand, if it is too small, it will look terribly out of place. A chandelier therefore, must be just of the right size to accomplish its purpose. In order to ensure that the chandelier is of the right size, the following must be considered before hanging one on the ceiling.
• Ceiling Height – The higher the ceiling, the bigger the required fixtures will be.
• Size and Shape of the Table or Island – The chandelier must not be too overpowering. Instead, it must complement the furniture over which it is hang.
• Size of the Room the Chandelier Will Illuminate – The fixture must likewise be able to complement the room well, and must be in proportion to the size of the room; sized just right and neither too big nor too small.
• Design and Form of the Chandelier – This will depend on what effect you want the chandelier to offer the area. If you want to make the room look bigger, airy and light fixtures will give that effect.
Here is one simple formula to determine the right size of chandeliers to hang in a particular area of the house: Get the length and the width of the room in feet, your foyer for example, that you want to adorn with a chandelier; then add the two together. If the length is 16' and the width is 12', adding the two figures will give you a sum of 28. The sum will be the diameter in inches of the ideal size of chandelier – in this case, 28".
The formula will work for just about any room in the house. Just be careful not to let the fixture suspend more than 7 feet from the floor. If there are windows, it will be a good idea to position the chandelier in such a way that it can be viewed from the outside. If you are in doubt as to whether a chandelier is either too big or too small for a room, the safer decision to make is to be on the large side. This is how great interior designers decide on home décor that may seem to be a little bigger than what may be appropriate.
Following are a few more useful tips in placing the right fixtures for your home.
• A good chandelier for the foyer is one that can provide an air of hospitality while giving the proper lighting effect to welcome guests into your home.
• If you have an extraordinarily large foyer, adding scones would be appropriate. Ideally, scones should be hanging 5 feet from the floor and 6 to 8 feet apart.
• Regardless of whether you are deciding which among flush, semi-flush, or multi-tiered chandeliers to hang in your foyer, the important thing to remember is that the bottom of the chandelier must be at least 7 feet from the floor.
