For most women who got pregnant, at least one of them may find the time to wonder if the dark spots on her face. No one needs to panic after one finds out that she has one on her face, because this is a rather common occurrence in pregnant women. However, some ladies may find it rather detrimental to their fashion statement. Fortunately, there exist melasma treatment options that are available both in conservative and medical means.
Chloasma faciei, commonly known to most people as "the mask of pregnancy," is characterized by a noticeable darkening of certain areas of a woman's face that appear as groups of patches. To explain scientifically this phenomenon, melasma is believed to be caused by exaggerated stimulation of the melanocytes, which are the cells in the skin that are responsible for the skin's color. When they get really stimulated, the effect is overproduction of melanin, which causes the skin to go darker when exposed to the rays of the sun. This process is thought to be brought about by the body's reaction to the overwhelming levels of estrogen and progesterone; hence, they are usually common in pregnant women. Other than that, the body's reaction to contraceptives, hormonal replacement medications, genetic origin, thyroid disease and Addison's disease may be some of the causes. So what are the melasma treatment options if a person happens to have one of these?
One of the most popular choices of management includes the medication known as hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a common chemical substance that impedes the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the manufacture of melanin. This agent is available in over-the-counter forms that have two percent strength and in prescription forms that have four percent strength.
Other than hydroquinone, there are some substances that have shown promise in treating melasma. A substance known as tretinoin is also an accepted way to reduce the pigmented areas. Tretinoin is an acidic substance that promotes the turnover of skin cells, leading to decreased pigmentation. However, this must not be used by pregnant women due to its possible dangerous reactions with the fetus. Another possible melasma treatment preference is azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is a natural acid found in wheat that works by reducing the activity of the melanin-producing cells. This results also in lighter skin color.
And of course, there are certain dermatologic ways to get rid of melasma. For the conservative method, facial peels that contain alpha hydroxyl acids may be used, as well as chemical peels that have glycolic acids. But for the definitive treatment, the best yet expensive way of treating melasma is through laser treatment. First of all, the melasma must be determined if it is epidermal or dermal through a Wood's lamp test. The Fraxel laser or an intense pulsed light could be used if the case is epidermal. As for dermal cases, it is unfortunate to say that most of them are unresponsive to the main forms of melasma treatment.
Although melasma is not deadly, it is still advisable to inquire for melasma treatment just to stay beautiful.
