Women are obsessed with skin whitening for different reasons. In an article published by CNN entitled "Skin Deep: Dying to be White," skin bleaching, skin bleaching creams, and other skin whitening products were found to be very popular in Asia. In countries like China and Japan, milky white skin was associated with royalty and was considered a measure of beauty. In ancient times, Chinese royals would ground pearls and seashells and ingest them to obtain white skin. In Japan, women would apply white make-up on their faces to make them appear paper-white.

Women are not alone in this obsession. Men from different Asian countries were surveyed and most of the respondents preferred partners who had lighter skin. This is the reason why most skin whitening companies would hire models with white, flawless skin to advertise their products to convince their target customers that having lighter skin would help them attract more men.

To take advantage of the demand for skin bleaching, skin bleaching creams were manufactured by firms in China and Taiwan. Most of these products were found to contain dangerously high levels of mercury. Mercury is an element, which is used as a conductor of electricity and as an ingredient in some cosmetic products, like mascara. It has been shown to be effective at skin lightening, which is why it is used as a component in skin whitening creams. Mercury is not bad per se, but it can be toxic, and fatal in some cases, when used in excess. The Chinese company Rosedew was sanctioned by the authorities when it was discovered that their products contained 27,000 to 60,000 times the acceptable level of mercury.

Meanwhile, in the West, women are aspiring for tanned, honey-toned skin. Whereas Asian women want to be as pale as possible, Westerners are constantly looking for ways to achieve a healthier-looking complexion. However, they still resort to skin bleaching, skin bleaching creams, and skin whitening products to get rid of skin discolorations that result from too much exposure to the sun. Studies have shown that people with fairer skin and lower concentrations of melanin are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation and skin conditions, such as age spots and freckles. This is because, since their skin does not have as much photoprotectants as dark-skinned individuals, their bodies compensate by producing more melanin to block out UV rays.

There are many ways to achieve whiter skin. Wealthier individuals resort to laser surgery, while others go for chemical peels. Companies that specialize in skin whitening also have products that contain ingredients, which are effective at suppressing melanin production. The most common of these ingredients is hydroquinone, which is strictly regulated by the FDA because of its potentially carcinogenic effect when used in extreme quantities. Another is alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which is an effective but harsh exfoliant that removes dead skin cells to facilitate skin renewal. There are also some creams that contain kojic acid and mandelic acid, which is a more skin-friendly version of AHA.

Skin whitening creams usually get mixed reviews. Some work, while others don't. Essentially, it is all about skin management. For these whitening agents to work, users must also make an effort to lower their exposure to the sun by applying sunblock and wearing a hat, or some other protective covering, whenever they go out.
