How Much Should I Weigh?
The focus on looking and feeling thin remains one of the greatest desires of women everywhere. Even as they are dieting or exercising with a dream to reduce their weight, many women aren't sure exactly what they should weigh. Women tend to underestimate their ideal weight, often dieting too much in hopes of achieving an ideal weight, rather than dieting to make their bodies' look and feel good. The appearance of your body and the number on the scale can be difficult to interpret because there are many factors that you must consider to determine which weight is right for you. Much of the makeup and shape of our body is determined by genetic factors and is influenced by our age, height, body frame, ethnicity, and other factors. While you can change the shape and size of your body by loosing fat and building muscles, you shouldn't focus on an exact weight number to determine your ideal weight.
The first thing that dieters should realize is that they are not "failing" at dieting simply because they do not achieve a certain weight. You simply cannot force yourself into being a weight that your body does not support, regardless of how much you diet. So the question becomes how much should I weigh? While your body knows the answer that is right for you, there are a few guidelines that you can follow to help you determine what weight is ideal for your body. Remember, these are only a guide, and can vary by as much as ten to twenty percent, based on your bone structure and frame.
Women should start with a baseline weight of one hundred pounds for their first five feet (sixty inches) of height. Then, add five pounds for each inch taller you are, or subtract five pounds for each inch less than five feet you are. The next thing that you should consider is your age. For every five years over thirty you are, add ten percent to your ideal weight. As our bodies age, we naturally develop additional fat stores that cannot (and should not) be removed by dieting. You can expect to gain about ten percent of your body mass for each five years you age, but if you find that you are gaining far larger amounts, it could signify that you have a medical condition or that you need to begin watching your weight.
If your weight is significantly more or less than the number you determined above, it's time to take action. Women who are very underweight may suffer from a number of medical conditions, and should talk to their doctor because being underweight can lead to fertility problems, osteoporosis, and a number of other problems. There are methods that can be helpful to increase your weight if you are underweight. Those who are significantly overweight will want to consider finding a diet and exercise program that will help them get closer to their ideal weight. The goal of any weight management program should be for you to look and feel good, not to look undernourished or unhealthy.
