Using a ball chair for your regular desk chair may not be a bad idea. If you feel that you are not getting enough cross-training or have no exercise other than walking, you may consider the conversion from a swivel chair to an exercise ball for use as a regular chair. Although walking is generally a good form of exercise, it does not promote abdominal strength. A good posture is critical for walking; an exercise ball can help you develop a good posture.
Benefits of Sitting on an Exercise Ball
When you regularly sit on the ball, the postural muscles are worked on. The body also constantly makes small adjustments on the leg muscles and the abs. With the ball exercise chair, your body remains active and does not develop the poor posture associated with slumping even in so-called ergonomic desk chairs.
The ball chair can help improve your balance and abdominal stability.
You are actually exercising even as you are comfortably seated. The exercise ball is also therapeutic as it can help alleviate sharp postural muscle pains in the back area one usually gets from long distance walking and running. Medical experts, however, caution on the use of the exercise ball as a regular chair for people with lower back disorders such as tailbone pains.
Is the Ball Ergonomic?
Of course, designers and manufacturers of expensive ergonomic chairs will warn people who may prefer to use the cheaper ball instead. People with existing back aches and other types of musculoskeletal problems must be wary about shifting to the ball and start using it for hours at a time. If you experience heightened lower back pains from using the ball as a chair, you must consider stopping its use and immediately seeking medical advice.
To get the most benefit from the ball, you must get one that is of the right size. Your thighs must be slightly sloped downwards and not be positioned at 90 degrees. The ball must likewise not be too high or you will have difficulty maintaining your balance while seated.
Although not too many studies have been published on the advantages of using the ball as a regular chair, many physical therapists and gym trainers swear by its effectiveness and claim that they use the ball themselves. Whether it is just a fad or not, a lot of people have been convinced and have started to use the ball upon advice of their physical therapists and personal trainers.
Exercise and Comfort
When using the ball for the first time, begin with no more than 30 minutes a day just to see how your body will tolerate and react to it. While others immediately find sitting on the ball comfortable and can enjoy sitting on it for hours each time, others may not have the same experience and need to slowly build up tolerance for it.
Once you get the hang of sitting on the ball chair, it will be easy to roll back and perform a few abdominal crunches. You may find it easier doing such exercises on the ball rather than on the exercise mat.
