Homeowners nowadays are more aware of the Feng Shui concept of auspicious and inauspicious locations within a home. Most know that they should locate the main door, kitchen and bedrooms in the auspicious sectors and placing the other areas such as the toilets and store in the less auspicious areas.
While this is important, home-owners should also pay attention during renovation to ensure that 'form' rules are not violated. Let me illustrate with some examples.
In link houses, the living and dining areas are usually located next to each other. It is good practice to create a logical separation between them, by installing a screen or partition. This screen or partition should however not be a solid structure as it will block naturally lighting from getting into the dining area. It will also restrict the smooth passage of air into the area creating a dark and stuffy dining area! This is highly undesirable. Instead of a solid partition, you should use a design that allows the passage of natural lighting and air, yet at the same time serving its purpose as a separator.
Most houses come with some form of an air well usually located in the middle of the house. The air well allows a freer flow of air into and out of the house. In the bid of fully air-condition the home, some home-owners seal off the air well completely. This can hinder the smooth flow of air in and out of the house. This is again a bad Feng Shui practice. While most houses have some form of air well or vent system, some do not. In such as case I would strongly suggest to the home owner to install one.
It is also common practice to extend the back of the house to increase kitchen space. While it is perfectly alright to want a larger kitchen, the extension can inadvertently create a problem. In most link houses the toilet is normally located at the back of the house.
Many times in an attempt to keep renovation cost down, the toilet is not moved to the back of the house together with the extension. In effect you now have a toilet that is located within the kitchen. The window vents of the toilet opens into the kitchen instead of out of the house. The kitchen affects the health of the family and the toilet window opening into it is definitely not good a good Feng Shui practice!
The obvious solution is to move the toilet to the back of the house together with the extensions. If you cannot do this due to cost or other consideration, you should install an exhaust system comprising of a fan and ducting to take the 'air' from toilet, bypassing the kitchen and directly out of the house!
Many others have made the mistakes that I mentioned above. I hope you do not. Happy home decorating and May Feng Shui be with you!
