As December 21, 2012, the day marking the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar cycle looms closer, onlookers can find no surety in the scores of prophets predicting the approach of doomsday or Armageddon. They can, perhaps agree that the date marks a rare conjunction of two astronomical occurrences. From an aesthetic and psychological perspective both events humble the Sun.
At cycle end, the Sun will enter the southernmost tip of Xibalba Be, the dark rift in the Milky Way, at the precise moment of the Winter solstice. For dwellers in the Northern Hemisphere this is the shortest day of the year, and consequently the time when the preeminence of the Sun, among celestial objects, is most depreciated. In the Mayan cosmology, the event marks the end of a 5126 year game of celestial soccer. The Sun is the ball and the dark rift is the goal. When the ball enters the goal it will bring about the overthrow of the renegade Seven Macaw and the return of the ancient hero One-Hunahpu, who was decapitated thousands of years ago by Macaw and his cohorts. At the same time, its entrance into the rift, actually a cloud of dust that runs along the central axis of the galaxy, is a depreciation of its eminence. On that day, it becomes like a Monarch standing in front of a trash dump, a beggar or a dark precipice; its proximity to the less than honorable backdrop, will serve, at least temporarily, to lessen its awe in the eye of the beholder.
While it is hard to find any scientific evidence that December 21, 2012 will be associated with a greater than usual number of natural disasters, onlookers can at least speculate that the Heavenly events will impact on the minds of modern men. Do Heavenly events exert this much psychological power? While solar worship is rare or non-existent in the modern world, no one can deny that many modern institutions both political and spiritual, are derived directly or indirectly from worship of the bright orb. Christians worship the birth of the "son of G-d," on the date that Helios is visibly returning to Northern hemisphere. Charlemagne, the great King of Europe, called himself the Sun-King. The Jewish festival of Chanukah, which usually falls in the weeks before the winter solstice when days are growing shorter, celebrate the light in the Temple that miraculously lasted 8 days until new shipments of oil arrived, a story with obvious parallels to the waning Sun.
Looking in the news, we see that the 2012 conjunction of rare stellar events is already having a significant impact on world politics. As the date approaches, many Earthly institutions patterned after top down hegemony, the earthly equivalent of solar rule, are being toppled. The overthrow or humbling of the Sun is not unlike the removal of a great dictator. And in fact, we see in the world today, as we approach December 2012, that a wave of revolutions is spreading around throughout the Middle East and that dictator after dictator is being unseated by a series of popular protests. One might speculate that the protests are patterned psychologically after the revolution about to take place in the heavenly spheres. The causal relationship between the 2011 spate of protests and the approach of December 21, 2012 was noted by the New Age scholar Eden Sky, co-author of the 2012 related book, "2013."
According to 2012 theoreticians, political dictators are not the only top down leaders slated to meet their end in the near future. The author of the Viking book "Super Life Secret Codes," noted in letters in the appendix of his book that 2012 is a time dedicated to strengthening of the individual's connection to the Universe, anyone or anything standing in the way of this primal connection, whether they be religious leaders or environmentally harmful industrial processes, can expect to be toppled.
The end of the Mayan Long Count calendar may not bring us the type of dramatic changes depicted in the movie 2012. We are unlikely to see mega tsunamis toppling the White House or the Vatican. But the psychological changes inspired by the movements in the Heavens may, in the long run, prove to be even more dramatic.
