Contrary to popular belief, toys are not made just to entertain and are not a waste of money. Playing with toys is actually a child's method of learning and experiencing things for the very first time. However not just any toy would count as educational. While some may argue that any toy can teach something to a child, not all of the things he learns are helpful to his overall growth. Education toys are the proper toys that will educate a child the things he should be learning.
Education toys can be introduced to children at a very young age, as long as these toys are age appropriate. As one might already know , toys with tiny parts should never be given to kids under three years of age because they can be a choking hazard.
Babies from 0-3 years old would be content with toys that make sounds and appeal to their senses. They are usually very curious at this age. Toys that make sounds when you press them are very interesting to them at this age. There are also teething toys that are safe to chew on and can be cleaned on a regular basis.
Interaction with the toy should not only entertain the child but also help the child learn something. Once the child has learned all that it can from the toy it is time to move on to other toys more suited to his/her age or intellectual capacity. This is often the case with old toys but there are some toys which a child still finds amusing even as he/she grows older.
For the older kids, Lego and other building blocks are ideal educational toys. Legos with big pieces should be given to the younger kids while the older ones can play with the ones with smaller pieces.
There are also science experiment kits available to older children. They should be old enough to use tools to play with these kind of toys; these toys usually cultivate in a child a love for science and learning. They include experiments on electricity and conduction. There are also chemistry experiment sets with non-poisonous substances and even a biology set which uses plastic replicas of the anatomy of different animals that a child can take a part and put back together.
Building model toys and cars can bring out the creativity of a child. It is also a lesson in history if these toys are historically accurate.
Educational computer games are also very popular nowadays, especially since the rise of the internet. A number of sites offer different educational games to children of all ages. There are computer games, which offer logic, IQ and trivia games. There are even ones for vocabulary and math. These games are oftentimes also available for hand held consoles and other similar games.
Toys should not be seen as a waste of money. Quite the contrary, they are essential to the physical, emotional and psychological growth of the child and cannot be dispensed with.
