Reading Toys are toys which enhance reading comprehension and recognition of letters and words. Reading toys can be books which have additional features on them or actual toys made to enhance reading comprehension. They can include anything from puppets, to dolls, crayons, colors and the like. Reading Toys do not have to be books. They can also be regular toys aimed at teaching children ages seven and below how to read through basic letter and word comprehension.
For younger learners , rubber letter puzzles are quite commonly used to pad the floor of their rooms. Older toddlers use this to form words. Blocks with letters on them are classic learning tools that have been around for many years. These blocks have a dual function of being building toys and reading toys at the same time so they are definitely must haves for toddlers.
Magnetic letters are also good reading toys. Kids aged 6-8 will have fun playing with the letters and words on the refrigerator.
An example of a classic reading toy which has been around for years is an illustrated storybook with electronic buttons on the side or below the book which, when pressed, creates sound. The book indicates at which point in the story you should press the button. It usually plays a line of one of the characters or a silly sound that can be found in the story of the book. It is quite entertaining to kids.
Some books include puppets or toys of a character from the book. While reading the characters' lines the child manipulates the puppet and makes it appear as if he is the one delivering them.
Leap Frog has also produced a number of interactive books, wherein the child carries a wand similar to a pen. When he presses on to a part of the text, it reads that part of the story. It aids the child in understanding the book more.
Books can also be made out of different material other than paper, to attract younger children. It can be made out of plastic or cloth. Some books incorporate different senses to the reading experience. Some books include different textured cloths with instructions to feel it while reading the book. Some books feature different scents. Other books incorporate all of these in one book.
There are also "activity" books wherein you color in the illustrations of the character. These often include crayons or other art tools to color with. Some books are actually instruction guides with certain tools and materials needed to create something. Most of the time these books are more science oriented.
Board Games are also very good reading toys. Some popular board games that increase reading comprehension are Scrabble and Boggle. Both of these games include the creation of words from a group of random letters given by chance. The players are forced to learn new words to get better at the game. A similar computer game that involves the creation of words called Bookworm is also available.
