A woman can never go wrong by wearing a classic luxury perfume. They express a timeless elegance and chic that is extraordinary in the more modern scents. As Chanel said: "Perfume is a part of you, no elegance is achievable without it". There's lots of classic luxury perfumes. Some of the best-loved and the most famous include: Chanel No.5, Joy, Arpege, Shalimar, Miss Dior and L'Air du Temps.
Chanel No.5:
Ernest Beaux, the perfumer who produced this scent, was introduced to Chanel by her lover, a Russian Grand Duke. Initially perfumer to the Tsars, Beaux's trip to the Arctic Circle inspired him to make a perfume that was exactly like the smell of the water at midnight.
2 legends surround the creation of the luxury scent which Marilyn Monroe famously dressed in to bed. Based on the first Beaux designed six perfumes. Chanel tried these and treasured the 5th so much that she referred to it as No.5. According to the other story, Chanel said that the number five had always been lucky for her. She said that: "I launch my collection on May 5th, fifth month of the year, leave it to the number which it carries and this number 5 will carry chance."
Joy
Joy was once known as 'the most high-priced perfume in the world' by Elsa Maxwell and it continues highly expensive. The French designer, Jean Patou asked for perfumer, Henri Almeas to generate a 'lighthouse' for his perfume business - one that would light through the Depression and bring joy in the dark years. Its generation allegedly 'involved 1600 flowers and 28 dozen roses - Ten percent (real) Bulgarian Rose! And (pricey!) Jasmine.' ('Jean Patou, The Man, The Company, The Fragrances').
Arpege
Stimulated by her daughter's passion for music, the couturier, Jeanne Lanvin, named one of her most well-known luxury perfumes, Arpege. This is French for Arpeggio. The splendid drawing on the bottle by the Art-Deco artist, Paul Iribe, shows Madame Lanvin and her daughter, Marguerite going to a ball together. Marguerite later became the opera singer, Marie-Blanche de Polignac. Arpege, reformulated a short time ago, is among the most romantic and flowery perfumes. It is a flowery bouquet of Bulgarian rose, jasmine, honeysuckle and lily.
Shalimar
Shalimar, produced in 1925, given its name after the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, India, was Guerlain's very first Oriental perfume. It is a tribute to the love story of an Indian emperor who had been ruined by his wife's death and built the Taj Mahal as her grave. This is still a very popular amber-dominated scent.
Miss Dior
Miss Dior, a classic chypre fragrance, is made by Christian Dior in 1947 being a tribute to his sister. It coincided luxury along with his New Look - wonderful, tight-waisted dresses with full skirts that brought back femininity and glamor after the war. Green and exhilarating, the reformulation is also a classic however some protest that it is different and would prefer to buy the vintage bottles.
L'Air du Temps
Produced in 1948 for the house of Nina Ricci, it was also made to bring joy to women following the war. This perfectly romantic and angelic scent is probably the best perfumes of all time. It also has a magnificent bottle - a sphere with winged doves - that was at first designed by the great artist, Lalique.
There are several other lovely, classic luxury smells with appealing stories behind them however , these half a dozen certainly stick out. All of these gorgeous aromas would make charming, romantic gifts for a woman of substance.
